Starting today, July 1, 2024, three significant new criminal laws have been implemented in India, replacing the colonial-era laws. These new laws are:
Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023:
Replaces the Indian Penal Code (IPC). It introduces changes such as new section numbers for various offenses. For example, murder is now under Section 101, and the offense of snatching is under Section 302. Additionally, sedition, previously Section 124-A of the IPC, is now addressed under Section 150 of the new law.
Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023:
Replaces the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). This law aims to streamline criminal procedures and includes stringent punishments for terrorism and lynching.
Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) 2023:
Replaces the Indian Evidence Act. This law incorporates modern practices such as the use of digital and electronic evidence and emphasizes a victim-centric approach to justice.
These laws were enacted to overhaul the criminal justice system, making it more relevant and effective for contemporary needs.
