Revamped Microdata Portal The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has officially launched an upgraded version of its Microdata Portal, introduced during the recent Conference of State Government Ministers. This revamped portal is designed to significantly enhance data accessibility and provide a seamless user experience, leveraging modern technologies to strengthen India’s Official Statistical System. It now acts as a one-stop platform for comprehensive datasets derived from various national surveys and economic censuses.
Key Objectives of the Revamped Microdata Portal
The upgrade focuses on overcoming the technical shortcomings of the earlier portal. Its primary goals include:
- Simplified access to a wide range of statistical information.
- Enabling data-driven planning and policy formulation at all levels of governance.
- Boosting the efficiency and productivity of field enumerators and data processors.
Integration of AI/ML for Smarter Data Classification
A major highlight of the launch is the introduction of an AI/ML-based classification tool. This smart feature is designed to make working with the National Industrial Classification (NIC) system easier:
- Utilizes natural language processing (NLP) to interpret user-entered queries.
- Instantly recommends the top five relevant NIC codes.
- Reduces manual effort and enhances precision in statistical data compilation.
World Bank Partnership for a Modern, Secure Portal
The development of the new portal was carried out in collaboration with the World Bank Technology Team. This strategic alliance ensured:
- Adoption of a modern, scalable tech architecture.
- Compliance with current security protocols.
- A responsive interface for smooth access across devices and platforms.
Launch of the National Statistical System Training Academy
Coinciding with the portal launch, MoSPI also introduced the National Statistical System Training Academy website. The platform is designed to:
- Centralize training resources and updates on capacity-building programs.
- Foster skill development within the official statistical workforce.
- Create a single-window hub for learning and development in the data domain.
Driving Data-Informed Policy for Viksit Bharat
With these initiatives, MoSPI is steering India toward a more data-centric governance model. Improved access to accurate, timely data will:
- Support more informed and evidence-based policy decisions.
- Enhance the effectiveness of government interventions.
- Align with the broader vision of Viksit Bharat – a Developed India.
