The 19th Divya Kala Mela, a vibrant celebration of artistic skill and inclusivity, was recently inaugurated in Visakhapatnam. Governor Shri S. Abdul Nazeer, alongside Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar and other esteemed dignitaries, graced the event, reaffirming their support for artisans with disabilities, known as Divyang artisans. This initiative focuses on empowering these artisans and fostering a more inclusive society.
Empowering Through Financial Support
As part of the mela’s initiative to promote financial independence, 10 Divyang beneficiaries were granted concessional loans amounting to ₹40 lakh. These loans, distributed by the National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation (NDFDC), are designed to help individuals with disabilities either launch or expand their businesses, offering them a pathway to self-reliance and entrepreneurship.
A Showcase of Diverse Talents
With over 100 Divyang artisans hailing from 20 states and Union Territories, the mela turned into a colorful exhibition of talent. The artisans presented a wide array of products, including handcrafted items, handloom textiles, and packaged food products. By supporting these local creators, the event aligns with the “Vocal for Local” initiative, which encourages boosting local economies and empowering artisans to achieve economic independence.
Event Highlights and Timings
Running from September 19 to 29, the Divya Kala Mela takes place daily from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM at Marine Ground, Andhra University. Visitors are treated to captivating cultural performances by Divyang artists while exploring the diverse food stalls offering traditional cuisines from different regions of India.
A Commitment to Inclusion
During the inauguration, Dr. Virendra Kumar and other leaders stressed the significance of events like Divya Kala Mela in empowering individuals with disabilities and fostering economic growth. They highlighted the importance of maintaining hygiene, promoting social welfare, and cultivating a sense of community responsibility. This gathering serves as a testament to the ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive and equitable society.
