IIT Madras Sets Sights on Making India a Global Chess Leader

The IIT Madras Center of Excellence in Sports Science and Analytics (CESSA) has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform India into the world’s leading chess hub. The announcement was made during the “Sports Tech Start-Up Conclave” in New Delhi.

Key Initiatives Unveiled

Several innovative plans were revealed at the conclave, backed by prominent sponsors like Dream Sports, Vedanta, and SFA Play. The focus is on utilizing advanced technology to elevate chess in India, boost fan engagement, and curb cheating.

Strong Government and Institutional Endorsement

Sandip Pradhan, Director-General of the Sports Authority of India, strongly supported the initiative. He expressed national pride in IIT Madras for leading this tech-driven sports revolution. Prof. V. Kamakoti, director of IIT-M, discussed how high-performance computing and artificial intelligence can enhance chess training, emphasizing pattern recognition and strategic planning.

Advancements in Educational and Training Programs

IIT Madras CESSA is also committed to advancing sports education and training. The center is preparing to launch new courses on the NPTEL (National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning) platform, aimed at enhancing skills essential for the sports industry. These programs will provide athletes, coaches, and related staff with comprehensive knowledge in sports science and management.

Strategic Future Plans

Looking forward, IIT Madras CESSA plans to introduce various new training programs, including a Bachelor of Science in Sports Science and a Master of Arts in Sports Management. Additionally, there are plans for certificate programs in AI/ML (Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning) and Data Science designed specifically for sports applications. By integrating cutting-edge technology with robust educational programs, IIT Madras CESSA aims to position India as the leading chess nation worldwide.
