India Meteorological Department
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recently marked a historic milestone, celebrating its 150th foundation day. On this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the Vision-2047 document, a strategic blueprint aimed at transforming weather forecasting and disaster management in India. The vision sets ambitious goals, including achieving 100% accuracy in three-day forecasts and 90% accuracy for five-day forecasts, with the ultimate objective of eliminating fatalities caused by severe weather events by 2047.
Pushing the Boundaries of Forecast Accuracy
The Vision-2047 document defines clear accuracy targets for weather predictions:
- 100% accuracy for three-day forecasts
- 90% accuracy for five-day forecasts
- 80% accuracy for seven-day forecasts
- 70% accuracy for ten-day forecasts
These goals aim to cover all significant weather events down to the block and panchayat levels, enhancing the reliability of forecasts and safeguarding communities.
Strengthening Severe Weather Detection
By 2047, the IMD envisions comprehensive detection of severe weather conditions at both the village and household levels. To achieve this, the department plans to deploy advanced remote-sensing technologies, such as satellites and radars. These systems will enable real-time alerts, empowering disaster management teams and the public to take proactive steps in response to potential threats.
Zero Fatalities: A Priority in Disaster Management
A cornerstone of the Vision-2047 document is its commitment to zero deaths from extreme weather events. This will be achieved through impact-based forecasting and risk-based warnings powered by cutting-edge geospatial and data-driven technologies. The focus is on minimising the impact of natural disasters on lives and property.
Weather Information: A Pillar for National Development
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra highlighted the importance of integrating weather and climate data into India’s national development goals. The Vision-2047 document aspires to position India as a “weather-ready” and “climate-smart” nation, driving socio-economic progress across the country.
Mission Mausam: Redefining Weather Forecasting
As part of the celebrations, Prime Minister Modi launched “Mission Mausam,” an initiative aimed at revolutionising weather forecasting through enhanced observation networks and the adoption of advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning. This mission seeks to redefine how weather data is collected, analysed, and utilised.
Embracing Future Technologies
Looking ahead, the IMD plans to harness scientific and technological advancements over the next two decades. By addressing current gaps in weather and climate monitoring systems, the department aims to enhance forecasting capabilities and ensure its services meet the evolving needs of the population.
This forward-looking strategy underscores India’s commitment to building a safer, more resilient future through innovation in meteorology and disaster management.
