INS Sunayna Launched

INS Sunayna
INS Sunayna, launched under the IOS SAGAR initiative, marks India’s commitment to maritime security, regional cooperation, and naval modernization.

April 5, 2025 marked a significant milestone for the Indian Navy with the launch of the Offshore Patrol Vessel INS Sunayna under the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR initiative. The launch ceremony, held in Karwar, Karnataka, was graced by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, underscoring India’s unwavering dedication to maritime security and cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). This event also aligned with the 10th anniversary of the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) initiative and National Maritime Day.

IOS SAGAR Initiative: Building Maritime Bridges

The IOS SAGAR initiative is designed to deepen maritime collaboration across IOR nations. As part of this effort, the deployment of INS Sunayna includes active participation from naval personnel of nine friendly countries—notably Comoros, Kenya, and Maldives. This reflects India’s strategic vision of promoting peace, mutual trust, and collective maritime security.

Project Seabird: Powering Naval Infrastructure

Project Seabird, a cornerstone of India’s naval modernization, has transformed Karwar with state-of-the-art operational capabilities. With an investment exceeding ₹2,000 crore, the project encompasses advanced marine infrastructure, a new armament wharf, and residential quarters for sailors. Over 90% of the materials used were sourced domestically, reinforcing the goals of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) and boosting the local economy.

Training & Interoperability: Learning Across Borders

INS Sunayna is also a platform for international naval training. It will host joint exercises focusing on firefighting, damage control, and seamanship, fostering interoperability between Indian and partner navies. This initiative aims to strengthen mutual understanding and ensure a safer maritime environment.

Honoring the Past: Maritime Heritage

The date of the launch carries historical resonance—it commemorates the departure of India’s first merchant ship, SS Loyalty, from Mumbai to London in 1919. This symbolic overlap honors India’s deep-rooted maritime heritage while highlighting its evolving leadership in global maritime affairs.

Looking Ahead: Navigating the Future

With INS Sunayna at the helm, India is poised to play a larger role in shaping maritime security in the IOR. The vessel not only strengthens India’s naval reach but also reaffirms its commitment to regional cooperation, stability, and shared prosperity across the seas.
