Kannadippaya, a time-honored tribal craft from Kerala, has officially received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This milestone not only secures intellectual property rights for the artisans but also opens doors for greater global recognition. The honor was awarded to two artisan communities in Kerala’s Idukki district, marking Kannadippaya as the first tribal handicraft from the state to receive a GI tag.

What is Kannadippaya?

Derived from Malayalam, Kannadippaya literally means “mirror mat.” This eco-friendly mat is handwoven using the soft, inner layers of reed bamboo. Its distinct reflective pattern gives it a mirror-like appearance, setting it apart from other crafts. More than just decorative, these mats are functional—providing warmth in winter and a cooling touch in summer—perfectly aligned with today’s sustainability trends.

The Craft and Its Makers

The mat is traditionally crafted by tribal communities such as the Oorali, Mannan, Muthuva, Malayan, Kadar, Ulladan, Malayarayan, and Hill Pulaya. The finest Kannadippayas are woven from Teinostachyum wightii, a particular bamboo species prized for its quality. Other types of bamboo are also used, contributing to the mat’s strength and aesthetic charm.

Cultural Legacy

Historically, Kannadippaya mats were offered to royalty as symbols of respect and honor by tribal groups. Beyond its craftsmanship, the mat stands as a powerful emblem of Kerala’s indigenous culture. Its continued production is essential for preserving not only the tradition but also the livelihood of these tribal artisans.

Understanding GI Tags

A Geographical Indication (GI) tag serves as a legal certification that links a product to a specific region, acknowledging its unique origin and quality. In India, GI tags are regulated under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. The country’s very first GI-tagged product was Darjeeling Tea in 2004–05.

Currently, Uttar Pradesh holds the highest number of GI-tagged products, followed by Tamil Nadu. The GI system not only helps safeguard traditional knowledge but also promotes local economies by giving regional products a competitive edge.

With the GI tag in hand, Kannadippaya is poised to enter new markets, both within India and internationally. As global consumers increasingly lean toward sustainable and handcrafted products, the future looks bright for this bamboo wonder.
