Prior to this appointment, Singh held the role of Defence Secretary-designate, a position he has prepared for since August 20, 2024.
A Seasoned Administrator
Rajesh Kumar Singh brings a wealth of experience to his new role. An Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1989 Kerala cadre, he has held various pivotal positions within the Indian government. Just before becoming Defence Secretary, Singh was the Secretary for the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) within the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, serving there from April 2023 to August 2024.
Honoring India’s Armed Forces
In a gesture of respect and reverence on his inaugural day, Singh paid tribute to the nation’s armed forces by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi. His words conveyed his deep appreciation for the valor and dedication of Indian soldiers, whom he acknowledged as a vital source of national pride and strength.
A Diverse Portfolio of Leadership
Singh’s career is marked by a range of critical roles, each contributing to his leadership journey. Previously, he served as Secretary for the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, where he led initiatives supporting India’s livestock and dairy industries. His experience also includes a tenure as Director of Works and Urban Transport within the Ministry of Urban Development. In Kerala, he held posts as Secretary of Urban Development and Finance Secretary, honing his skills in governance and administrative management.
Transition of Leadership
Rajesh Kumar Singh takes over from Shri Giridhar Aramane, who retired on October 31, 2024. Aramane, an IAS officer from the 1988 Andhra Pradesh cadre, leaves a strong legacy in public service, setting a high standard for Singh as he steps into this prominent role in India’s defense establishment.
