In an impressive display of disaster preparedness, the Indian Army conducted its annual Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercise, Sanyukt Vimochan 2024, in Gujarat on November 18-19, 2024. This event showcased India’s ability to respond effectively to natural calamities, with General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff, underscoring its critical importance.
Collaborative Tabletop Exercise in Ahmedabad
The first day, November 18, saw the initiation of the exercise with a tabletop exercise on cyclone management held in Ahmedabad. Participants included prominent organizations such as the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA). The objective was clear: to enhance inter-agency coordination and refine planning strategies for disaster relief operations.
Live Demonstrations in Porbandar
On the second day, Chowpatty Beach in Porbandar became the epicenter of action as a multi-agency demonstration brought theory into practice. The Indian Army collaborated with the Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard to simulate a large-scale cyclone scenario. The drill encompassed activities like aerial reconnaissance, rescue missions, casualty evacuation, and rehabilitation strategies for affected communities.
Spotlight on Indigenous Innovation
A key highlight of the exercise was its focus on indigenous solutions, aligning with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. An industrial display showcased Indian-made disaster response technologies, emphasizing the country’s commitment to self-reliance in disaster management. These advancements demonstrate India’s resolve to innovate and develop robust, homegrown solutions.
Strengthening Global Ties
Sanyukt Vimochan 2024 also served as a platform for international collaboration. Representatives from nine nations, including members of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Indian Ocean Region, participated. Their presence enabled the exchange of ideas, best practices, and technological innovations, contributing to a global dialogue on disaster preparedness.
Recognizing Excellence and Effort
In his closing remarks, General Dwivedi lauded the professionalism and dedication of all participants. He emphasized the pivotal role of the Indian Armed Forces in disaster response, particularly in search and rescue operations and humanitarian assistance. A special acknowledgment was extended to the Gujarat government and industry partners for their unwavering support in making the event a success.
A Step Towards Global Solidarity
The exercise underscored India’s readiness to tackle disasters while embodying the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – the idea that the world is one family. Sanyukt Vimochan 2024 not only strengthened India’s disaster response capabilities but also contributed significantly to international efforts in mitigating the impacts of natural calamities.
