India’s largest-ever military exercise, Tarang Shakti-2024, will feature aerial and naval drills with 30+ countries. Highlighting defense capabilities and international cooperation, it showcases India’s commitment to advanced military strategies.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is gearing up for its most extensive multilateral military exercise, “Tarang Shakti,” slated for August and September 2024. This ambitious event underscores India’s dedication to forging robust international defense relations and military collaborations.

Objective of ‘Tarang Shakti’

The primary aim of ‘Tarang Shakti‘ is to enhance cooperation and synergy among the participating nations through intricate aerial drills and missions. This initiative marks a significant stride in India’s military diplomacy, fostering better mutual understanding and effective collaboration among the nations involved.

Phases of the Exercise

The exercise is divided into two distinct phases:

Phase One (August 6-14, 2024) – Sulur, Tamil Nadu

  • Focus: Joint operations, including air combat maneuvers, air-to-air refueling, and strategic airlift.
  • Participating Countries: Germany, France, Spain, and the UK.

Phase Two (August 29-September 14, 2024) – Jodhpur, Rajasthan

  • Focus: Advanced scenarios like simulated combat missions and electronic warfare exercises.
  • Participating Countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Greece, Singapore, the UAE, and the US.

Participation and Significance

Out of the 51 nations invited, nearly 30 will participate, including major nations like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Despite being traditional defense partners, Russia and Israel will not participate.

Showcasing India’s Defence Capabilities

‘Tarang Shakti’ will also serve as a platform to showcase India’s military equipment, such as the LCA Tejas and Rafale jets, aligning with India’s goal of ‘Atmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) in defense. Concurrently, there will be a defense industrial expo aimed at promoting Indian defense innovations and fostering partnerships between established companies and startups.

Tarang Shakti is an annual naval exercise initiated by India to bolster naval strength and maritime security. Launched in 2019, it includes various naval forces from India and other countries.

The exercise encompasses activities such as:

  • Anti-submarine warfare: Detecting and countering enemy submarines.
  • Surveillance and reconnaissance: Monitoring sea areas and collecting intelligence.
  • Humanitarian assistance: Providing aid during emergencies.

Ensuring that several naval fleets can collaborate effectively is the aim. This drill demonstrates India’s dedication to safeguarding regional waterways while utilizing cutting-edge naval strategies and equipment. It highlights cooperation in maritime operations and features both Indian and foreign naval vessels.
