Why the Z-Morh Tunnel Was Needed
At an altitude exceeding 8,500 feet, the region experiences severe winters that lead to prolonged road closures. These seasonal disruptions have historically isolated Sonamarg, adversely affecting its tourism-dependent economy. The Z-Morh Tunnel promises to eliminate these challenges, providing uninterrupted access essential for both civilians and military personnel.
Overcoming Construction Hurdles
The project, launched in 2012, encountered significant delays due to financial and administrative obstacles. Initially awarded to Tunnelway Ltd., the contract later shifted to the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). Eventually, APCO Infratech took over, resulting in a soft launch in February 2024. However, the official inauguration was deferred due to the Model Code of Conduct during local elections.
Strategic Significance
The Z-Morh Tunnel is a critical component of the larger Zojila Tunnel project, which aims to establish seamless connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh. This infrastructure is vital for India’s defense strategy, especially given the region’s proximity to contentious borders with Pakistan and China. By reducing dependence on air transport for military logistics, the tunnel enhances strategic preparedness and operational efficiency.
