At the 63rd National Open Athletics Championships held at Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru, Vithya Ramraj made headlines by breaking a long-standing record in the women’s 400m hurdles. Her remarkable time of 56.23 seconds surpassed the 1985 record of 56.80 seconds set by the iconic P.T. Usha, marking a historic moment in Indian athletics.

Vithya Ramraj’s feat is more than just a personal accomplishment—it’s a milestone in the annals of Indian track and field history. P.T. Usha, fondly known as the “Queen of Indian Track and Field,” held this record for nearly four decades, symbolizing a high benchmark in Indian athletics. By breaking this record, Vithya has not only elevated her own status but has also shone a spotlight on the potential of current and future Indian athletes.

Standout Performances in the Men’s Events

The championships were filled with incredible athleticism on display, especially in the men’s events. Nithin from Tamil Nadu was another standout, setting a new meet record in the men’s 200m with a time of 20.66 seconds, surpassing the previous mark held by Animesh Kujur. Here are some other noteworthy performances:

  • 800m: P. Mohammed finished at 1:48.10.
  • 10,000m: Abhishek completed the race in 29:48.18.
  • 400m Hurdles: Aman clocked in at 50.52 seconds.

Notable Achievements in the Women’s Events

Women athletes also delivered stellar performances, with Ancy Sojan taking center stage in the long jump. Her impressive leap of 6.71 meters earned her the title of the best female athlete of the championships. Other remarkable achievements in the women’s events included:

  • 200m: Nithya Gandhe clocked in at 23.51 seconds.
  • 800m: Chanda finished the race in 2:01.16.
  • 10,000m: Seema completed her race in 33:56.86.

Awards and Team Championships

The championships concluded with a series of recognitions for outstanding performances. Vithya Ramraj (400m hurdles) and Nithin (200m) were lauded as standout performers of the event. In the team categories, Railways emerged victorious in the women’s category, while Services clinched the top spot in the men’s category. Railways also secured the overall team championship title.
