Vaibhav Sooryavanshi created history in the Duleep Trophy on 31 August 2026 by becoming the youngest player to score a half-century in the tournament. The 15-year-old batter reached the milestone while playing for East Zone against Central Zone in the semi-final at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. His innings included seven fours and seven sixes. He came close to scoring a century but fell eight runs short of the landmark.

The young batter’s aggressive approach helped East Zone build a 161-run opening partnership. The team went on to score 266 runs in its first innings.

Youngest Duleep Trophy Half-Century Maker

The new record is particularly notable because Sooryavanshi broke a record that had stood for 57 years.

Laxman Singh previously held the record for being the youngest player to score a half-century in the Duleep Trophy. He achieved the feat in January 1969 at the age of 16 years and 23 days.

Sooryavanshi was only 15 years and 157 days old when he reached his fifty. His performance therefore made him the youngest half-century maker in the history of the tournament.

The achievement adds another important milestone to the young cricketer’s rapidly developing career.

Sooryavanshi Also Sets Captaincy Record

The latest batting record came shortly after another major achievement for Sooryavanshi.

On 30 August 2026, he became the youngest captain in Duleep Trophy history. He was given the leadership responsibility after East Zone’s regular captain Ishan Kishan suffered a finger injury.

Taking charge of a zonal first-class side at such a young age is a significant achievement. Sooryavanshi then followed the captaincy milestone with an important contribution with the bat.

His performance showed that he could handle both responsibility and pressure during a major domestic tournament.

East Zone vs Central Zone Semi-Final

The record-breaking innings came in the semi-final between East Zone and Central Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

East Zone finished its first innings with 266 runs. Sooryavanshi’s opening partnership played an important role in helping the team reach a competitive total.

Central Zone faced difficulties in its reply and ended Day 2 on 45 runs for the loss of three wickets.

The match remained closely contested as both teams competed for a place in the Duleep Trophy final.

A 57-Year-Old Record Falls

Records in domestic cricket can often remain untouched for many years, and the Duleep Trophy has seen several young players produce memorable performances.

Laxman Singh’s youngest half-century record had remained in place since 1969. More than five decades later, Sooryavanshi broke it with his 92-run knock.

The record is even more impressive because the Duleep Trophy is a first-class competition, where young players compete against experienced domestic cricketers.

Sachin Tendulkar Still Holds Centurion Record

Although Sooryavanshi now holds the youngest half-century record in the Duleep Trophy, another major youth record remains with Sachin Tendulkar.

Tendulkar remains the youngest player to score a century in the Duleep Trophy. He achieved the feat at the age of 17 years and 262 days.

Sooryavanshi’s latest performance places him among the young players who have made an early impact in the tournament.

Duleep Trophy and Domestic Cricket

The Duleep Trophy is one of India’s important domestic first-class cricket competitions. It provides a platform for players from different parts of the country to compete at a high level.

The tournament has traditionally involved zonal teams such as East Zone, Central Zone, North Zone, South Zone, West Zone and North East Zone.

Performances in competitions such as the Duleep Trophy can help young players gain valuable experience in longer-format cricket.

A Promising Moment for Indian Cricket

Sooryavanshi’s record-breaking performance comes at a time when Indian domestic cricket continues to provide opportunities for young talent.

Scoring 92 runs from 81 balls, reaching a fifty in 42 balls and leading East Zone at the age of 15 have made the Bengaluru semi-final an important moment in his career.

His ability to contribute with the bat while handling leadership duties has added further attention to his progress in Indian cricket.
