Bharat Forge Gas Turbine Project in Visakhapatnam

Bharat Forge Gas Turbine project in Visakhapatnam will boost India’s naval defence and create 750 jobs.

Bharat Forge Gas Turbine project has marked a major step in India’s defence manufacturing sector. Bharat Forge signed an agreement with the Andhra Pradesh Government to set up India’s first private-sector Marine Gas Turbine repair and development complex in Visakhapatnam. The facility will strengthen India’s naval engineering capabilities and support indigenous defence production.

The new complex will be developed on nearly 80 acres of land inside the Andhra Pradesh Defence Manufacturing Corridor. The location is strategically important because it is close to the Naval Dockyard, INS Eksila, and the Eastern Naval Command Headquarters in Visakhapatnam.

This project aims to improve India’s ability to repair, overhaul, and develop marine gas turbines used in naval ships and defence platforms.

What are Marine Gas Turbines?

Marine gas turbines are advanced propulsion systems used in warships and fast naval vessels. These engines are known for their compact size, lightweight structure, and high power output. They also provide fast acceleration, making them suitable for naval operations.

Many modern naval ships depend on marine gas turbines because they can deliver strong performance while saving space inside vessels.

Two Phases of the Bharat Forge Gas Turbine Project

The project will be completed in two major phases.

Phase 1

The first phase will focus on repair and overhaul operations. It will include:

  • Hot section restoration facilities
  • Component manufacturing units
  • Fast turnaround support for Naval Dockyard operations

The company plans to provide a 72-hour turnaround service for naval maintenance requirements in Visakhapatnam.

Phase 2

The second phase will include India’s first private-sector Marine Gas Turbine Development and Assembly Hall. A special hot test cell will also be established for indigenous engine testing and qualification.

This phase is expected to support India’s long-term goal of self-reliance in defence technology.

Defence Manufacturing Boost for India

The Andhra Pradesh Defence Manufacturing Corridor is becoming an important centre for aerospace and defence industries. Such defence corridors help attract investment, improve manufacturing capacity, and support advanced technology development.

The Bharat Forge Gas Turbine complex is expected to strengthen India’s naval infrastructure and reduce dependence on foreign technology in marine propulsion systems.

Employment and Strategic Importance

The project is expected to create nearly 750 direct and indirect jobs. It will also help India become a regional repair and overhaul hub for friendly foreign navies.

Visakhapatnam already plays a major role in Indian naval operations, and this project will further increase its strategic importance in the defence sector.
