History of Typing & Typewriters
Typing is such an ordinary part of our lives today that we rarely stop to think about its history. From writing emails to chatting on social media, every keystroke we make has a long and fascinating backstory. The history of typing shows us how technology evolved from mechanical devices to the advanced digital keyboards we use now.
The Beginning of Typewriters
The first practical typewriter was invented in 1868 by Christopher Latham Sholes. This machine was manufactured by Remington & Sons, revolutionizing office communication by allowing legible, professional documents to be prepared faster than ever before.
The Birth of QWERTY
Sholes designed the QWERTY layout specifically to prevent typewriter mechanical hammers from jamming when frequently-used keys were struck in quick succession. Amazingly, this layout remains standard on every modern computer and mobile screen worldwide.
