Delhi Driverless Air Train: India’s First Airport Air Train Project

Delhi Driverless Air Train will connect Delhi Airport terminals with India’s first driverless airport transit system.

Delhi Driverless Air Train project is being developed at Indira Gandhi International Airport to improve passenger travel between terminals. The new Automated People Mover system will become India’s first driverless airport air train and is expected to change airport connectivity in Delhi.

What is the Delhi Driverless Air Train?

The Delhi Driverless Air Train is an Automated People Mover (APM) system designed for quick and smooth passenger movement inside the airport area. It is a driverless rail-based transport system mainly used at large international airports.

The project will cover around 7.7 km, including 5.7 km elevated track and 2 km surface-level track. The system is planned to reduce travel time between terminals and improve passenger comfort.

Route and Connectivity of Delhi Driverless Air Train

The Delhi Driverless Air Train will connect important areas of Indira Gandhi International Airport, including:

  • Terminal 1
  • Terminal 2
  • Terminal 3
  • Aerocity
  • Cargo City

The air train will help transit passengers move easily across the airport complex without depending on road transport.

Project Cost and Expected Launch

The estimated cost of the Delhi Driverless Air Train project is between ₹2,000 crore and ₹4,000 crore. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) will fund the project through internal resources.

The air train is expected to start operations by the end of 2027 or during 2028. Some reports also suggest the full project may continue until 2029.

Modern Technology and Passenger Benefits

The Delhi Driverless Air Train is planned with modern driverless technology similar to systems used at major airports like Singapore Changi Airport and Hong Kong International Airport.

Transit passengers are likely to use the service free of cost, while non-passengers may need to pay a small fee. The project is also expected to improve Airport Service Quality scores at Delhi Airport.

Eco-Friendly Airport Transport System

The Delhi Driverless Air Train will help reduce traffic movement inside the airport campus. This can lower fuel use and reduce the airport’s carbon footprint.

Automated airport transit systems are becoming popular worldwide because they provide faster travel, lower pollution, and better passenger convenience.
