Joshua Wong Pleads Guilty in Hong Kong

Joshua Wong pleads guilty in Hong Kong’s national security case and could face a lengthy prison sentence.

Joshua Wong pleaded guilty on September 2, 2026, to a national security charge involving alleged collusion with foreign forces in Hong Kong. The 29-year-old pro-democracy activist entered his guilty plea at the High Court in Admiralty. The case has attracted international attention because it could lead to a long prison sentence, including life imprisonment in serious cases.

The case is connected to allegations that Wong worked with other activists, including exiled former lawmaker Nathan Law, to seek support from foreign governments for sanctions and other measures against Hong Kong and China. Prosecutors said these activities continued after Hong Kong’s national security law came into force in 2020.

Joshua Wong’s Guilty Plea

Joshua Wong appeared before the High Court on Wednesday and admitted the charge of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces to endanger national security. The prosecution has linked the case to international lobbying activities carried out by Wong and others.

According to the prosecution, Wong and Nathan Law had agreed to pursue political goals through international lobbying. Authorities alleged that they approached foreign governments, organisations and individuals to seek sanctions, blockades or other measures against Hong Kong and China.

The charge relates to activities that took place around 2020. Prosecutors also said Wong continued supporting such efforts through social media and foreign media after the national security law was introduced.

Hong Kong National Security Law

Hong Kong’s national security law was introduced in June 2020 following large anti-government protests in 2019. The law covers offences including secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces.

The legislation has significantly changed Hong Kong’s political environment. Authorities say the law is necessary to protect national security and maintain stability. Critics, including international rights organisations, have argued that it has been used to restrict political opposition, protest activity and freedom of expression.

Wong’s case is particularly significant because it is his second prosecution under the national security law.

Joshua Wong Already in Prison

Joshua Wong has already spent nearly six years in custody. He is serving a four-year and eight-month prison sentence after pleading guilty in an earlier national security case connected with an unofficial primary election held in 2020.

That sentence was scheduled to end in January 2027. The new case, however, could extend his time in prison depending on the sentence imposed by the court.

Wong’s lawyer asked the court to consider a lower sentence. The defence pointed to the time Wong has already spent in custody and his guilty plea. The court has not yet announced a sentencing date.

Joshua Wong and Hong Kong’s Democracy Movement

Joshua Wong became internationally known as a teenager during Hong Kong’s 2014 Umbrella Movement. The protests involved large demonstrations calling for greater democratic participation in the city.

He later became one of the most recognisable figures in Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement. Wong was also involved in Demosisto, a political group that advocated greater democratic rights and political change in Hong Kong.

His political activities brought him into conflict with Hong Kong authorities, particularly after the introduction of the national security law. His latest case has again placed Hong Kong’s political freedoms and the use of national security legislation under international attention.

Possible Prison Sentence

The offence of colluding with foreign forces is treated as a serious national security crime under Hong Kong law. The offence can carry a prison term of three to 10 years, while cases considered grave can result in life imprisonment.

Wong’s guilty plea may be taken into account when the court determines his sentence. His defence team has asked for leniency, while prosecutors have presented allegations concerning his international lobbying activities.

The final sentence has not yet been announced, leaving Wong’s future in custody uncertain.

International Attention on the Case

The Joshua Wong case has drawn attention from governments and human rights groups outside Hong Kong. Supporters of Wong argue that his prosecution reflects the wider pressure faced by Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement since the introduction of the national security law.

Chinese and Hong Kong authorities, however, maintain that national security laws are necessary to protect the city and prevent activities they consider threats to national security.

The case comes as several prominent Hong Kong democracy activists have faced imprisonment, prosecution or exile in recent years. Wong’s second national security prosecution has therefore become another major development in the continuing debate over Hong Kong’s political future and civil liberties.
