PPT ATH Plant in Karnataka
PPT ATH Plant production has received a major boost in India with Hindalco Industries Limited commissioning the country’s first greenfield Superfine Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate manufacturing facility in Belagavi, Karnataka, on 27 August 2026. The new plant is aimed at increasing domestic production of a specialty material used in fire-safety and insulation products.
The facility has been developed by Hindalco Industries, the metals flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group. Its commissioning is significant because Superfine PPT ATH is used in several modern industrial applications, including flame-retardant cables, polymer insulation, electrical products and thermal insulation.
What is Superfine PPT ATH?
Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate, commonly called ATH, is an aluminium hydroxide-based material. It is widely used as a flame-retardant filler in different polymer products.
When exposed to high temperatures, ATH releases water vapour and helps reduce the spread of flames. This makes it useful in products where fire safety is important. Superfine PPT ATH can be used in halogen-free flame-retardant materials, polymer insulators and thermal insulation products.
The material is especially important for industries that need safer electrical and infrastructure products. Its applications are also linked with growing demand for electric vehicles, power systems and modern construction.
India’s First Greenfield Superfine PPT ATH Facility
The new Hindalco facility in Belagavi is described as India’s first greenfield Superfine PPT ATH manufacturing plant. A greenfield facility is a new industrial project developed from the beginning, rather than an expansion or conversion of an existing plant.
The first phase of the facility has an annual production capacity of 30,000 tonnes. Hindalco has planned the plant for further expansion, with the eventual capacity expected to reach 60,000 tonnes per year.
This phased approach will allow production to increase as demand for specialty alumina materials grows in India and international markets.
Plant Uses Renewable Energy
One of the notable features of the facility is its focus on renewable energy. Hindalco describes the plant as the world’s only specialty alumina plant powered entirely by renewable energy.
The facility uses a combination of solar, wind and biomass power. This approach is aimed at reducing dependence on conventional energy sources and lowering the environmental impact of manufacturing.
The plant also uses automated process controls. Hindalco has developed the manufacturing process through its in-house “flask-to-factory” research and development programme, which connects laboratory-level research with large-scale industrial production.
Role in Fire Safety
Fire safety is becoming increasingly important as the use of electrical equipment, cables and polymer-based materials continues to grow. Superfine PPT ATH can help these materials resist the spread of fire.
The material is used in halogen-free flame-retardant (HFFR) cables, polymer insulators and thermal insulation products. HFFR materials are designed to reduce the release of harmful gases during a fire compared with some conventional halogen-containing materials.
This makes PPT ATH relevant to electrical infrastructure, buildings, transportation systems and other applications where fire protection is a key requirement.

Support for Electrical and EV Industries
The new plant is also linked with India’s expanding electrical and electric vehicle ecosystem. Electric vehicles require a wide range of cables, insulation materials and electrical components.
As India increases investment in renewable energy, power transmission, electric mobility and digital infrastructure, demand for specialised materials used in these sectors is also expected to grow.
Domestic production of Superfine PPT ATH can therefore support manufacturers that need flame-retardant materials for their products. It can also help strengthen supply chains for industries that are expanding rapidly in India.
Reducing Import Dependence
The commissioning of the Belagavi plant is part of a broader trend towards increasing domestic manufacturing of specialised industrial materials.
Producing Superfine PPT ATH within India can reduce dependence on imported material for industries that use it in electrical, infrastructure and other applications. Local availability can also help manufacturers build more reliable supply chains.
The project reflects the growing importance of specialty materials in India’s manufacturing sector. While aluminium is widely known for its use in construction, transport and packaging, advanced aluminium-based materials such as PPT ATH serve more specialised industrial needs.
Belagavi Emerges as a Manufacturing Location
The plant is located in Belagavi, Karnataka, an important industrial centre in the state. Karnataka has developed a strong manufacturing and technology ecosystem, with industries ranging from engineering and automobiles to electronics and advanced materials.
The establishment of a specialty alumina facility adds another dimension to the state’s industrial base. It also supports the development of domestic manufacturing capabilities for materials used in modern infrastructure.
Current Manufacturing Trend in India
The Hindalco project comes at a time when India is encouraging domestic manufacturing, cleaner industrial production and stronger supply chains.
Specialty materials are becoming increasingly important because industries are looking for products that provide better safety, lower environmental impact and improved performance. Renewable energy-powered manufacturing facilities are also gaining attention as companies work to reduce emissions from industrial operations.
The Superfine PPT ATH plant combines these trends by focusing on a specialised fire-safety material while using renewable energy sources for production.
Hindalco’s Technology and Expansion Plans
Hindalco has used its internal research and development capabilities to develop the manufacturing process for the new facility. The “flask-to-factory” approach is intended to take a material from research and development through commercial-scale production.
The initial 30,000-tonne annual capacity provides a starting point for the facility. The planned expansion to 60,000 tonnes will allow Hindalco to respond to increasing demand from sectors such as electrical equipment, infrastructure and electric mobility.
The commissioning of the plant therefore represents not only a new manufacturing facility but also an effort to build domestic capabilities in advanced and specialty materials.
