Esports Competition at Asian Games 2026

The esports events at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games are scheduled to take place from 23 September to 2 October 2026. Esports has gained greater recognition in major international sporting events in recent years, creating new opportunities for professional players across Asia.

India has received approval to compete in four game titles: League of Legends, Pokémon UNITE, eFootball, and Puyo Puyo Champions. These games represent different styles of competitive gaming, ranging from team battles and strategy to football simulation and puzzle-based competition.

League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena game that requires teamwork, strategy, quick decision-making, and strong coordination between players. Pokémon UNITE is also a team-based competitive game where players work together to achieve objectives during fast-paced matches.

Meanwhile, eFootball brings digital football competition to the Asian Games stage, while Puyo Puyo Champions represents the competitive puzzle gaming category.

Growing Esports Culture in India

Esports has grown significantly in India due to improved internet access, smartphones, gaming computers, streaming platforms, and the increasing popularity of competitive gaming events. Indian players are now participating in national and international tournaments across multiple game titles.

Competitive gaming is no longer limited to casual entertainment. Professional esports involves regular training, team coordination, coaching, strategy development, event management, broadcasting, and technology support. Major tournaments also attract sponsors, gaming companies, media organisations, and millions of online viewers.

The participation of the Indian Esports Team at the Asian Games 2026 will bring further attention to the country’s growing esports ecosystem. It also highlights the increasing connection between technology, sports, entertainment, and youth culture.
