Kyiv-Warsaw Train was struck by a Russian drone in Ukraine’s Volyn region on September 13, 2026, near the border with Poland. Drone Hits Passenger Train Near Poland

The strike took place close to the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing, an important rail and road link between Ukraine and Poland. The incident happened during a wider Russian drone attack on several parts of Ukraine.

Ukrzaliznytsia said the locomotive of the Kyiv-Warsaw Train was hit while the service was still on the Ukrainian side of the border. The train was approximately two kilometres from Poland when the strike occurred. The railway operator said its monitoring team had identified the threat and warned the train crew in advance.

The attack did not result in casualties among the passengers. The incident nevertheless caused concern because of its location close to the territory of a NATO member.

High-Profile European Officials Were Nearby

The strike also attracted international attention because several European officials had recently travelled through the same border area.

A diplomatic train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt and European security officials had crossed into Poland before the attack. Former CIA Director David Petraeus was also reportedly at Yahodyn station on another train at the time.

Ukrainian railway officials said the diplomatic train had been evacuated around 15 minutes before the later strike. Ukrzaliznytsia also suggested that the earlier train may have been the intended target, although this remains an assessment rather than an independently established fact.

The presence of senior European figures added to concerns about the security of railway routes used by foreign officials travelling between Poland and Kyiv.

Russia Says Railway Infrastructure Was Targeted

Russia has acknowledged carrying out strikes against railway infrastructure in western Ukraine. Russian officials have said such infrastructure can be used to move military equipment and supplies from Europe into Ukraine.

The passenger train that was struck, however, was travelling from Kyiv towards Warsaw. It was not transporting military equipment into Ukraine. The incident therefore led to different interpretations from Ukrainian and Russian sides about the broader purpose of the strikes.

The wider Russian attack on September 13 involved hundreds of drones and targeted locations across Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities reported strikes on civilian, industrial, energy, railway and logistics infrastructure in several regions.

Another Strike Near the Border Crossing

The train was not the only target near the Ukraine-Poland border. A separate drone strike damaged a vehicle near the Yahodyn-Dorohusk crossing. Earlier reports described a nearby petrol station being hit and catching fire.

The incidents temporarily affected activity around the border crossing. Poland’s authorities activated surveillance and defence systems in response to the attacks but said there was no confirmed violation of Polish airspace during the incident.

The location is important because Poland is a member of both NATO and the European Union. The border crossing is also part of an important route connecting Ukraine with European transport networks.

Poland Strengthens Border Security

The latest Kyiv-Warsaw Train incident has also led Poland to increase security around border infrastructure.

Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said on September 15 that Poland was reinforcing protection at crossings along the Ukrainian border. Measures include additional protective structures, observation posts and security improvements around locations including Dorohusk, Medyka and Korczowa.

The Polish government has described the recent attacks as a wider European security concern. Polish forces have continued monitoring activity near the border while maintaining security at important crossing points.

Railway Routes Remain Important in the War

Railways have played an important role in Ukraine since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. With Ukrainian airspace closed to regular civilian aviation, trains have become a key method of travel for government officials, diplomats, journalists and other international visitors travelling between Poland and Kyiv.

The railway network is also important for moving people and goods across Ukraine. This has made railway infrastructure a recurring target during the conflict.

The strike on the Kyiv-Warsaw Train highlights the risks faced by passenger services operating close to active conflict zones. It also shows how the fighting has continued to affect areas far from the main front lines.

Wider Security Concerns in Europe
