Lieutenant General Akhilesh Kumar is now responsible for 1 Corps, one of the Indian Army’s major strike formations. The corps is also known as Strike One and is headquartered at Mathura.
The formation was raised in April 1965 and has played an important role in India’s military history. It became part of the Northern Command in 2021 following a change in its operational orientation. Reports have noted that its responsibilities now include operations in the northern sector, while the formation has historically been associated with India’s western theatre.
The change of command on October 1 was part of a wider set of senior leadership changes in the Indian Army. Lieutenant General Mohit Seth also took charge of 16 Corps at Nagrota around the same time.

Extensive Operational Experience
Akhilesh Kumar brings more than three decades of military service to his new position. According to the Army, his career has included experience in different terrains and operational environments, including service along the Line of Control.
He has also served in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir. This operational background is relevant to his new role because senior commanders of major formations need experience across different types of military environments.
Before taking command of 1 Corps, Lieutenant General Kumar was serving as Additional Director General, Discipline and Vigilance, in the Adjutant General’s Branch at Army Headquarters.
His earlier assignments included command and staff responsibilities that contributed to his experience in both field operations and military administration.
Military Education and Commissioning
Lieutenant General Akhilesh Kumar studied at Sainik School, Tilaiya, before attending the National Defence Academy in Pune. He was commissioned into the 4th Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles on June 13, 1992.
The Rajputana Rifles is one of the Indian Army’s historic infantry regiments. Kumar’s service with the regiment formed an important part of his military career before he moved into senior command and staff appointments.
He also holds an MSc from the University of Madras and a Master’s degree in Management Studies from Osmania University. His educational background combines military training with higher education in science and management.
Military Honours
Akhilesh Kumar has been recognised for his service with important military honours, including the Sena Medal and the Vishisht Seva Medal.
The Sena Medal recognises acts of individual gallantry or distinguished service, while the Vishisht Seva Medal is awarded for distinguished service of an exceptional order. These honours reflect his long military career and service in demanding operational and command environments.
His record also includes experience in different operational areas, giving him a broad background as he takes responsibility for one of the Army’s major corps.
Role of 1 Corps
1 Corps is commonly referred to as Strike One Corps. A corps is a large military formation that can include multiple divisions and supporting units.
Strike formations are maintained with a high level of operational readiness and are designed to undertake major military operations when required. Their structure and deployment can change according to India’s strategic and operational requirements.
The headquarters of 1 Corps is located at Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. The formation’s history goes back to 1965, when it was raised as India’s first strike corps. It also played a role during the 1971 India-Pakistan war, including operations in the Shakargarh sector.
New Leadership Amid Changing Security Needs
The appointment of Akhilesh Kumar comes at a time when the Indian Army is adapting its formations and command responsibilities to changing security conditions.
The Army has continued to adjust the deployment and roles of major formations based on developments along India’s northern and western borders. The movement of 1 Corps into the Northern Command structure in 2021 was part of this wider adjustment.
For a senior commander, the role involves overseeing operational preparedness, training, planning and coordination across the formation. The GOC also works with higher Army headquarters and other formations as part of India’s overall defence structure.
Lt Gen V Hariharan’s Tenure Ends
Lieutenant General Akhilesh Kumar has succeeded Lieutenant General V Hariharan as the commander of 1 Corps. Hariharan had been serving as the GOC before the October 2026 leadership change.
The transfer of command is a regular part of the Indian Army’s senior leadership system. Such changes allow experienced officers to take responsibility for different formations and bring their operational and command experience to new assignments.
With Kumar now heading Strike One, attention will be on maintaining the formation’s operational preparedness and carrying forward its responsibilities under the Army’s current command structure.
