Historic Bronze Medal for India
Jhandu Kumar competed in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting category against some of the strongest athletes in the Commonwealth.
Weighing 72.4kg, he successfully lifted 190kg on his second attempt.
He later attempted 196kg in his final lift but narrowly missed it.
For much of the competition, Jhandu remained among the leading competitors before eventually securing the bronze medal.
His performance earned India its first official medal of the Commonwealth Games 2026 and gave the Indian contingent an excellent start.

Early Life in Bihar
Jhandu Kumar was born in Harnaut village in Nalanda district, Bihar.
He belongs to a modest family, and his father worked as a vegetable vendor.
From birth, Jhandu was affected by polio, which made everyday life much more challenging.
Despite physical limitations and financial hardships, he remained determined to build a career in sports.
His inspiring journey shows that dedication and perseverance can help overcome even the toughest circumstances.
Journey Started with Athletics
Interestingly, Jhandu Kumar did not begin his sporting career as a powerlifter.
When he entered competitive sports in 2017, he participated in:
- Shot Put
- Discus Throw
He competed in the F55 category and won medals at both district and state-level competitions.
While training in the gym to improve his strength, he developed a strong interest in powerlifting.
Coaches later encouraged him to switch to para powerlifting, a decision that completely changed his sporting career.
Overcoming Financial Challenges
Jhandu’s path to international success was far from easy.
Elite-level powerlifting requires proper nutrition, equipment, and regular training, all of which were difficult for his family to afford.
To support himself, Jhandu sold vegetables and travelled nearly 20 kilometres to nearby markets.
At one stage, he borrowed money from friends to purchase an e-rickshaw so he could earn a better income.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic affected those plans and created additional financial difficulties.
Despite these setbacks, he continued training with unwavering determination.
Turning Point in His Career
Jhandu’s first national championship did not bring success.
However, his talent was noticed by Paralympic bronze medallist Rajinder Singh Rahelu.
Recognising his potential, Rajinder invited Jhandu to train at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) in Gandhinagar.
Professional coaching and better training facilities helped him improve rapidly.
Under expert guidance, Jhandu soon became one of India’s leading para powerlifters.
National and International Success
Over the past few years, Jhandu has consistently improved his performances.
Some of his major achievements include:
- National Record – 205kg at the 2025 National Championship
- Improved National Record – 206kg at the Khelo India Para Games
- Bronze Medal – Beijing World Cup 2025
- Bronze Medal – Asian and Oceania Championships 2026

Each achievement reflects his steady progress and growing reputation in international para powerlifting.

Understanding Para Powerlifting
Para powerlifting is one of the major strength sports in international para competitions.
Unlike Olympic weightlifting, para powerlifting focuses on the bench press.
Athletes compete by lifting the maximum possible weight while following strict technical rules.
Each competitor receives three attempts, and the highest successful lift determines the final result.
The sport requires exceptional upper-body strength, balance, concentration, and discipline.
Inspiration for Future Athletes
Jhandu Kumar‘s story has become an inspiration for aspiring athletes across India.
His journey demonstrates that success is possible regardless of financial background or physical challenges.
Through determination, discipline, and consistent hard work, he transformed his life and earned a place among India’s leading para athletes.
His Commonwealth Games medal also highlights the growing strength of Indian para sports on the international stage.
