First Commonwealth Games Medal

Shilpa K. Shyla originally finished fourth in the women’s shot put F57 final after producing a personal-best throw of 7.26 metres.

However, following an official review of the competition, Nigeria’s Eucharia Iyiazi was disqualified, resulting in the revised standings.

With this change, Shilpa was promoted to the bronze medal position, making it her first Commonwealth Games medal.

The revised results also gave India a historic achievement, as two Indian athletes finished on the podium in the same event.

India’s Double Podium in Para Athletics

India enjoyed a memorable day in para athletics.

Sharmila Dhankar won the gold medal with a season-best throw of 9.81 metres, while Shilpa Shyla secured bronze.

Ghana’s Zinabu Issah claimed the silver medal with a throw of 8.65 metres.

This became India’s first double podium finish at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, highlighting the country’s growing strength in para athletics.

The achievement also reflected the excellent preparation of the Indian para-athletics team.

Emotional Reaction After the Medal

Speaking after the event, Shilpa shared her excitement and gratitude.

She said it was her first appearance at the Commonwealth Games and that winning a medal felt like a dream come true.

Shilpa thanked everyone who supported her throughout her journey, including her coaches, training staff, teammates, and the Sports Authority of India.

She also expressed gratitude to the Government of India and the Government of Karnataka for their continued support.

Coach Praises Her Hard Work

Indian para-athletics head coach K.R. Satyanarayana praised Shilpa’s commitment and discipline.

According to him, Shilpa trained continuously over the past six months with the clear goal of winning a Commonwealth Games medal.

He also said she performed even better during the competition than she had during training.

The coach expressed confidence that Shilpa has the ability to achieve more success in future international events, including upcoming para sports championships.

From Mysuru to the International Stage

Shilpa Shyla comes from Kanchigara Koppalu village in Mysuru district, Karnataka.

Her journey has been filled with courage and determination.

At the age of four, she lost her left leg in a road accident.

Instead of allowing the tragedy to stop her dreams, she continued her education and completed her postgraduate degree along with a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.).

Later, she entered para athletics and gradually built a successful sporting career through consistent training and perseverance.

Today, she has become an inspiration for many young athletes across the country.

Understanding the Shot Put F57 Event

The women’s shot put F57 category is a para athletics event for athletes with lower limb impairments who compete from a seated position.

Athletes throw a heavy metal ball, known as the shot, and the longest valid throw determines the winner.

The event requires upper-body strength, balance, proper throwing technique, and excellent control.

International competitions follow strict technical rules to ensure fair competition among all participants.

Growing Success of Indian Para Sports

India has made remarkable progress in para sports over the last few years.

Athletes have been winning medals at the Paralympics, World Championships, Asian Para Games, and now the Commonwealth Games.

Improved coaching, better sports facilities, and government support have helped many talented athletes perform at the highest level.

The strong performances by Sharmila Dhankar and Shilpa Shyla in Glasgow further demonstrate India’s rising presence in international para athletics.

For Shilpa Shyla, this Commonwealth Games bronze is not just a medal but the reward for years of determination, hard work, and resilience. Her inspiring journey from overcoming a childhood disability to standing on the international podium reflects the growing strength of Indian para athletics and encourages many young athletes to chase their dreams with confidence.
