Organised every year in Haryana, the Surajkund Crafts Mela has grown into a major cultural event that reflects India’s artistic diversity. The fair brings together skilled craftsmen, performers and culinary experts under one roof, creating a lively atmosphere filled with colours, music and creativity. Visitors get a unique opportunity to interact directly with artisans and understand the stories behind their handmade creations.

Theme Focused on Local to Global Vision

This year, the Surajkund Crafts Mela is organised around the theme “Vocal to Global.” The theme highlights India’s strong push to promote local products and traditional art forms on the global stage. It reflects the larger vision of encouraging local artisans to expand their reach beyond regional markets and connect with international audiences.

Uttar Pradesh and Meghalaya have been selected as the theme states for this edition. Both states are showcasing their distinctive art forms, folk traditions and cuisine. Uttar Pradesh is presenting its famous chikankari embroidery, brassware, wooden crafts and traditional sweets. Meghalaya is highlighting bamboo products, handwoven textiles and unique tribal art forms. Through their dedicated pavilions and cultural performances, the theme states are giving visitors a deep insight into their regional heritage.

Adding an international dimension, Egypt is participating as the partner nation this year. Egyptian artisans have brought their traditional crafts, decorative items and cultural expressions to the mela. This partnership strengthens cultural exchange and allows visitors to experience global craftsmanship alongside Indian traditions.

A Platform Supporting Self Reliance of Artisans

The Surajkund Crafts Mela strongly supports the idea of Atma Nirbharta, which means self reliance. According to Parth Gupta, Managing Director of the Haryana Tourism Corporation Limited, the mela provides an important international platform for artisans from across India and abroad. By participating in the event, craftsmen can directly showcase and sell their products to customers without middlemen.

Many artisans who take part in the Surajkund Crafts Mela belong to families that have practiced traditional crafts for generations. For them, the mela is not just a business opportunity but also a way to preserve their artistic legacy. Direct interaction with buyers helps them understand market demand and improve their designs while maintaining traditional techniques.

The fair also encourages young artisans to continue family traditions. With increasing global exposure and better income opportunities, many young craftsmen are showing renewed interest in learning and preserving their cultural heritage.

Rich Cultural Experience for Visitors

One of the biggest attractions of the Surajkund Crafts Mela is the complete cultural experience it offers. Visitors can explore a wide range of handicrafts, including textiles, pottery, metalwork, woodcraft and paintings. Each stall reflects the artistic identity of a different region.

The mela grounds are filled with vibrant performances throughout the day. Folk dancers and musicians from around 20 Indian states perform on stage, representing diverse traditions. The sound of drums, folk songs and traditional instruments creates an energetic environment that keeps visitors engaged.

Food lovers also find the Surajkund Crafts Mela especially appealing. Regional cuisines from different states are available at dedicated food stalls. Visitors can enjoy traditional dishes prepared by skilled chefs, offering authentic flavours from across India. From spicy street food to sweet delicacies, the mela serves as a celebration of India’s culinary diversity.

Promotion of Cultural Heritage

The Surajkund Crafts Mela plays an important role in preserving and promoting traditional crafts. In an era where machine made products dominate markets, such events help protect handmade art forms. By giving artisans a platform to showcase their work, the mela keeps traditional skills alive.

The event also creates awareness among urban audiences about rural craftsmanship. Many visitors learn about rare art forms that they may not have seen before. This exposure increases appreciation for handmade products and encourages people to support local artisans.

The international participation further enhances cultural understanding. When artisans from different countries share their crafts, it builds mutual respect and strengthens global cultural ties.

Strong Safety and Management Arrangements

To ensure a smooth experience for visitors, the organisers have made detailed arrangements. Around 100 CCTV cameras have been installed across the mela premises to maintain security. Cleanliness measures are in place to keep the area hygienic despite large crowds.

Special facilities such as wheelchair access and ambulance services have also been arranged. These steps aim to make the Surajkund Crafts Mela safe and inclusive for all visitors. Proper infrastructure and crowd management allow artisans and tourists to participate comfortably throughout the event.

With its vibrant atmosphere, strong focus on self reliance and global outreach, the Surajkund Crafts Mela continues to stand as a symbol of India’s rich cultural heritage. The 39th edition once again highlights the beauty of handmade crafts and the importance of supporting traditional artisans in a rapidly modernising world.
