This new UNESCO Chair is the first of its kind in Asia dedicated to gender inclusion and skill development. It was inaugurated by Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. The launch highlights India’s growing role in linking education with global gender equality efforts.
Focus on Future Skills
Under the Symbiosis UNESCO Gender Chair, SSPU has already trained around 10,000 girls in modern sectors such as robotics, automation, semiconductor technology, advanced manufacturing, and defence technology. These are fast-growing industries with strong job opportunities. The university stated that all trained candidates received job offers, showing the success of its skill-based training approach.

Leadership and Vision
The initiative is led by Dr Swati Mujumdar, Pro-Chancellor of SSPU. She has designed a strong system that connects education with industry needs. The focus is on practical learning and improving employability. This model aims to reduce the gender gap in technical fields and increase women’s participation in high-growth sectors.
Role of UNESCO and Skill Development
UNESCO, established in 1945 and based in Paris, works to promote education, science, and culture worldwide. UNESCO Chairs are global partnerships that support research and development in key areas. This initiative also aligns with India’s Skill India Mission launched in 2015, which focuses on improving vocational training and job readiness.
Boost to Women-Led Development
The Symbiosis UNESCO Gender Chair strengthens India’s position in global skill development and supports women-led growth. By connecting education, industry, and policy, it creates long-term opportunities for women in emerging sectors. With increasing demand for skilled workers, such initiatives are expected to shape a more inclusive and future-ready workforce.
