Agray ASW Craft Induction Boosts Navy Strength

Agray ASW Craft Induction boosts Indian Navy strength with advanced anti-submarine warfare and indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.

India has strengthened its maritime defence capabilities with the delivery of Agray, an Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), to the Indian Navy. This induction marks another milestone in India’s push for indigenous naval shipbuilding and coastal security. The vessel is part of a broader programme aimed at improving anti-submarine warfare and surveillance in shallow coastal waters.

Overview of Agray Warship

Agray is the fourth vessel in a series of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts being developed for the Indian Navy. It has been designed and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, Kolkata. The vessel also revives the legacy of the earlier INS Agray, a patrol vessel that served the Navy until 2017. The project follows standards set by the Indian Register of Shipping, ensuring safety and performance.

Key Design and Propulsion Features

A key feature of Agray is its waterjet propulsion system, making it one of the largest Indian naval warships to use this technology. Waterjet propulsion provides better manoeuvrability in shallow waters and reduces noise, which helps in stealth operations. The ship is specially designed for littoral zones where underwater threats are harder to detect.

Agray ASW Craft Induction: Armaments and Sensors

The vessel is equipped with modern warfare systems, including lightweight torpedoes and indigenous rocket launchers. It also uses advanced SONAR (Sound Navigation and Ranging) systems that help detect and track underwater threats accurately. These features improve its role in anti-submarine warfare and mine detection.

Strategic Importance for Indian Navy

The Agray ASW Craft Induction strengthens the Indian Navy’s ability to handle underwater threats, especially in coastal areas. With rising challenges in the Indian Ocean Region, such vessels play a key role in maritime security. It also supports India’s goal of self-reliance in defence manufacturing and boosts indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.
