During the ceremony, CM Majhi expressed deep admiration for Harichandan, calling the book launch a proud moment for Odisha. He emphasized that the value of the books extended beyond their pages, reflecting the author’s life, principles, and decades-long commitment to public service.
Biswabhusan Harichandan has played a pivotal role in Odisha politics over several decades. He served as the founding president of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Odisha unit, holding the position four times. His political journey also includes being elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly five times between 1977 and 2009 and serving as a cabinet minister on four separate occasions.
Before his active involvement in politics, Harichandan practised law at the Odisha High Court starting in 1972. Notably, during the Emergency period of 1975–77, he led pro-democracy movements in Odisha and faced imprisonment, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to constitutional values and democratic principles. CM Majhi highlighted that such a life of integrity and public service adds immense weight to the literary works being celebrated.

Focus on Bakshi Jagabandhu and the Paika Rebellion
One of the books released, “Bakshi Jagabandhu: The Great Commander”, revisits the legacy of Bakshi Jagabandhu, the celebrated leader of the 1817 Paika Rebellion in Khordha. The Chief Minister noted that the uprising occurred four decades before the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny and deserved wider recognition as an early struggle for India’s independence.
CM Majhi underlined that the book sheds light on lesser-known aspects of the revolt and its historical importance. By bringing attention to the Paika Rebellion, the work not only honours Jagabandhu’s leadership but also strengthens the awareness of Odisha’s contribution to India’s freedom movement. The launch provided a platform for scholars and history enthusiasts to engage with the state’s rich heritage and understand its significance in a national context.
Essays on History, Democracy, and Identity
The second book, an Odia publication titled “E Mati Katha Kahe”, contains 30 essays exploring a diverse range of themes. These include reflections on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, democracy, media, Odia identity, world peace, and the Nabakalebara festival of Lord Jagannath.
CM Majhi expressed hope that these essays would be translated into English to reach a wider audience across India and the world. He praised Harichandan for capturing the essence of Odisha’s culture, history, and political life in an accessible format, blending thoughtful commentary with literary finesse. Beyond these two books, Harichandan’s literary contributions include plays, essays, short stories, and his autobiography “Sangram Sarinahi”, which has been translated into multiple languages.
Recognizing Odisha’s Rich Heritage
The book launch was more than a literary event; it was a celebration of Odisha’s historical and cultural achievements. By revisiting the Paika Rebellion and other significant moments in Odisha’s past, Harichandan’s works help preserve the state’s history for future generations. CM Majhi highlighted that remembering such contributions strengthens a sense of identity and pride among the people of Odisha.
The Chief Minister also drew attention to key historical facts associated with the books. The Paika Rebellion occurred in 1817 in Khordha, while the Emergency in India lasted from 1975 to 1977. He noted that Nabakalebara, a periodic ritual associated with Lord Jagannath in Puri, is another example of Odisha’s cultural richness highlighted in Harichandan’s writings. These references underscore the deep historical and cultural context that the author brings to his work, making it both educational and inspiring.

Legacy of Public Service and Literature Highlighted at CM Majhi Book Launch
Throughout the ceremony, CM Majhi lauded Harichandan for his remarkable contributions to politics, governance, and literature. He described the author as a figure whose life exemplifies patriotism, dedication, and principled public service. By connecting historical scholarship with active political engagement, Harichandan sets an example for future leaders and writers in the state.
The CM Majhi Book Launch reflected a broad appreciation of Harichandan’s efforts to shape Odisha’s political discourse and preserve its historical memory. Attendees praised the initiative for highlighting the importance of documenting political history and celebrating those who have dedicated their lives to public service.
As Odisha continues to honour its leaders and cultural icons, events like this serve as a reminder that literature and history are deeply intertwined with governance and civic responsibility. Through his books, Biswabhusan Harichandan ensures that Odisha’s stories, struggles, and achievements continue to inspire readers and citizens alike, cementing his legacy as both a statesman and a writer.
