Vijay Tamil Nadu CM Takes Oath in Chennai

Popular actor Thalapathy Vijay officially entered a new phase of public life after becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Thousands of supporters celebrated the historic moment across the state.

The new government was formed after the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, where Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats. TVK later formed a coalition government with the Indian National Congress and other allies.

Rise of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam was founded by Vijay in February 2024. In a short period, the party gained massive public support across Tamil Nadu.

The victory of TVK is considered historic because it became the first non-Dravidian party to form a government in Tamil Nadu since 1967. For nearly six decades, the state politics was mainly controlled by DMK and AIADMK.

Vijay Wins Two Assembly Seats

During the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, Vijay contested from Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies.

He won both seats with a strong margin. Later, Vijay resigned from the Tiruchirappalli East seat and decided to retain Perambur.

The 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly was scheduled to meet on 11 May 2026 for the swearing-in of members. The election for Speaker and Deputy Speaker was planned for 12 May 2026.

First Decisions of Vijay Government

Soon after taking charge, Vijay signed several important government files on his first day in office.

Some of the major announcements included:

200 units of free electricity for domestic consumers
A special women’s safety force with a dedicated helpline
A statewide anti-drug mechanism

The new Chief Minister was also expected to prove his majority on the Assembly floor before 13 May 2026.
