SCBA Women VP Post: Supreme Court Proposes Permanent Reserved Role

SCBA Women VP Post proposal aims to create a permanent women-only Vice-President role in SCBA from 2027-28.

SCBA Women VP Post became a major topic after the Supreme Court of India proposed a permanent women-only Vice-President position in the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA). What is the SCBA?

The Supreme Court Bar Association is the recognised body of lawyers who practice in the Supreme Court of India. The association conducts annual elections for important posts such as President, Vice-President, Secretary, and executive committee members.

The Supreme Court was established on 26 January 1950 under the Constitution of India and remains the country’s highest judicial institution.

SCBA Women VP Post Proposal

The Supreme Court suggested creating an additional Vice-President post reserved only for women from the 2027-28 election cycle. The proposal aims to improve women’s participation in the leadership structure of the SCBA.

Earlier, on 27 April 2026, the court had already reserved the Vice-President post for women for the 2026-27 elections. However, after objections from several women lawyers, the court restored the earlier election arrangement.

Under the present arrangement:

  • The Secretary post remains reserved for women
  • Two senior executive committee posts are reserved for women
  • Three executive committee posts are also reserved for women members

Objections Raised by Women Lawyers

Seven women members of the SCBA, including R Shase and Savita Devi, approached the court regarding the reservation structure.

Their application argued that the Secretary post has more functional importance than the Vice-President post. They requested that the existing reservation arrangement should continue for the 2026-27 elections.

The court accepted the concerns and maintained the earlier system for the upcoming election cycle.

Women Representation in Legal Bodies

Reservation of posts for women in professional legal associations is used as an internal representation measure in many parts of India. The SCBA Women VP Post proposal is linked to an elected association office and not to any constitutional or statutory government post.

The move is seen as an effort to encourage greater participation of women lawyers in decision-making positions within legal institutions.
