GATE Online Form 2027: Dates, Eligibility and Syllabus

GATE Online Form 2027 is available for candidates who want to appear for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027. Indian Institute of Technology Madras is the organising institute for GATE 2027, which is conducted jointly by IISc and the IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board, Ministry of Education.

GATE 2027 will be conducted as a Computer Based Test (CBT) on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027. The examination will have 30 test papers, including the newly introduced Robotics and Automation (RA) paper. The GATE 2027 syllabus has also been revised.

GATE 2027 Exam Details

The examination will test candidates through General Aptitude and questions related to their selected paper. Candidates can apply for one or two papers, but the two-paper choice must follow the combinations specified by GATE 2027.

GATE 2027 Application Dates

The GATE 2027 registration schedule has been revised. The application portal opened on 2 September 2026. The regular registration period without a late fee closes on 27 September 2026, while applications with a late fee can be submitted up to 5 October 2026.

Candidates should check the official GATE website regularly because the organising institute states that dates are subject to change.

Eligibility Criteria for GATE 2027

Candidates who are studying in the third year or higher of an undergraduate degree programme, or who have already completed an eligible government-approved degree, can appear for GATE 2027.

Eligible academic backgrounds include Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts and Humanities. Certain three-year bachelor’s programmes such as B.Sc., B.A., B.Com. and BCA are also covered under the eligibility rules. Candidates with eligible integrated programmes can also apply according to their year of study.

There is no age limit for appearing in GATE 2027. Candidates can also appear for the examination multiple times.

GATE 2027 Application Fee

The application fee depends on the candidate category and whether the application is submitted during the regular or extended registration period.

The payment process is completed online through the application portal. Candidates should check the amount displayed on the official portal before making the payment.

New Paper in GATE 2027

One of the important changes in GATE 2027 is the introduction of the Robotics and Automation (RA) test paper. The official GATE website also states that changes have been made to the XE, XH and XL sectional paper codes, while the Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) paper has been converted as a sectional paper under Engineering Sciences (XE). The syllabi for the test papers have also been revised.

GATE 2027 Question Paper Pattern

GATE 2027 will be conducted in English and will contain 65 questions carrying 100 marks. The paper will include MCQ, MSQ and Numerical Answer Type questions.

The exact distribution of Engineering Mathematics and subject questions varies according to the selected paper. Candidates should check the official syllabus and question-paper pattern for their paper before preparation.

GATE 2027 Syllabus

The official GATE 2027 syllabus has been revised. Candidates should therefore use the 2027 syllabus instead of relying only on previous-year study material. The official website provides separate syllabus information for all 30 test papers.

The new RA paper covers the subject area of Robotics and Automation, while changes have also been made to several existing papers and sectional structures.

DigiLocker and Application Process

GATE 2027 has introduced DigiLocker-based registration for Indian nationals. The official website advises candidates to create or update their DigiLocker account. Candidates using an unverified DigiLocker account can also register under the provisions stated by GATE 2027, with additional document scrutiny where applicable.

To apply, candidates should visit the official GATE 2027 website, open the application portal, complete the registration process, provide personal and academic information, select the required paper or permitted two-paper combination, upload the required documents and pay the applicable fee.

After submission, candidates should save a copy of the completed application and payment details.

GATE 2027 Examination Centres

Candidates can select six examination cities, and the choices must be from the same GATE zone. The GATE committee may add or remove cities and can allot a city different from the choices provided by the candidate because of operational requirements.

For candidates under the IIT Guwahati zone, the tentative cities include locations in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and West Bengal.

Opportunities Through GATE Score

A valid GATE score can be used for admission to various Master’s, direct Doctoral and Doctoral programmes, subject to the eligibility and admission rules of the concerned institution. Qualifying candidates may also be eligible for financial assistance in applicable programmes.

Several Public Sector Undertakings have also used GATE scores as part of their recruitment processes. However, qualifying in GATE does not by itself guarantee admission, financial assistance or PSU employment.
