GENESIS stands for Gen-Next Support for Innovative Startups. The programme is designed to help innovators move from an early idea towards a working technology product. It focuses especially on startups and innovators from Tier-II and Tier-III cities, helping expand India’s startup ecosystem beyond major technology centres.
Under the GENESIS EIR programme, selected participants can receive financial support of up to ₹10 lakh. Along with financial assistance, the programme provides mentorship, product development guidance and access to incubation facilities.
The support is aimed at helping young founders deal with some of the biggest challenges faced during the early stages of building a technology startup, including developing a prototype, testing an idea and understanding the market.
Launch Event Held in Coimbatore
The GENESIS EIR 3.0 initiative was launched at the GENESIS NextGen Startup Summit, Coimbatore Edition, held on 4 August 2026. The event took place at Rathinam Global University in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
The launch brought attention to the growing role of smaller cities in India’s technology and startup ecosystem. Coimbatore is already known for its industrial and manufacturing base, and initiatives such as GENESIS aim to connect such regional innovation centres with wider national startup networks.
The formal application window for the third cohort opened on 24 August. Eligible applicants can apply to participate in the programme and seek support for developing technology-based solutions.
Financial Support and Mentorship
A major feature of GENESIS EIR is the combination of financial assistance and professional support. Selected innovators can receive grants of up to ₹10 lakh, depending on the programme’s selection process and requirements.
Financial support can help founders work on early product development, while mentorship can provide guidance on technology, business planning and market preparation. Incubation support can also give startups access to facilities, experienced professionals and useful industry connections.
The programme is intended for early-stage startups that are less than two years old, as well as individual innovators working on promising technology ideas.
Focus on Emerging Technologies
GENESIS EIR Cohort-3 covers several emerging technology areas that are becoming important for India’s digital and industrial growth. These include artificial intelligence and machine learning, deep technology, Internet of Things, semiconductors and VLSI, cybersecurity, blockchain, quantum computing and augmented reality and virtual reality.
The programme supports innovations at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 1 to 4. This means that the supported ideas can range from early research and basic concepts to proof-of-concept projects, laboratory validation and early prototypes.
For young technology companies, support at this stage can be important because developing a new product often requires considerable time and resources before it becomes commercially ready.

Supporting Startups Beyond Major Cities
One of the important features of GENESIS EIR is its focus on Tier-II and Tier-III cities. India’s startup activity has traditionally been concentrated in large technology and business centres, but smaller cities are increasingly producing entrepreneurs and technology innovators.
Regional startup programmes can help founders access funding, mentors and incubation facilities without having to immediately relocate to major metropolitan areas.
This approach also fits into the wider growth of India’s digital economy, where artificial intelligence, semiconductors, cybersecurity and other advanced technologies are receiving increasing attention from both government and industry.
Role of MeitY Startup Hub
The programme is being implemented through the MeitY Startup Hub, a national platform associated with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The hub works to connect startups, incubators, investors, government programmes and technology organisations.
Through initiatives such as GENESIS, the government is seeking to strengthen the country’s innovation pipeline by supporting entrepreneurs at the stage when their ideas are still being developed.
The third cohort also comes at a time when India is placing greater emphasis on emerging technologies, digital infrastructure and domestic technology development. Support for early-stage innovators can help create a stronger base for future technology products and businesses.
Application Timeline
The application process for GENESIS EIR Cohort-3 opened on 24 August 2026, with the deadline set for 3 September 2026. The programme is aimed at eligible early-stage startups, researchers, students and aspiring entrepreneurs developing technology solutions within the identified sectors.
With financial assistance of up to ₹10 lakh, mentorship and incubation support, the initiative is designed to help promising ideas move from the early development stage towards working products and future businesses.
