Lovlina Borgohain Claims Her First Asian Games Gold

The victory marked an important moment in Borgohain’s career. She had won a silver medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023, but this time she finished at the top of the podium. Her latest result also made her only the second Indian woman to win an Asian Games boxing gold medal after Mary Kom, who won the 51 kg title at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon.

Borgohain also has an Olympic bronze medal from Tokyo 2020. Her journey has included major successes as well as difficult periods, making the Asian Games victory an important comeback in her international career.

A Strong Performance Against China

In the 75 kg final, Borgohain maintained control against Bao Ziyi and secured a clear 5-0 verdict from the judges. Her performance helped her convert the Asian Games silver she had previously won into gold.

The victory was especially significant because it came against a Chinese opponent in a major championship final. Borgohain stayed composed through the bout and finished with a unanimous decision.

Road to the Final

Borgohain had to win two earlier bouts to reach the gold-medal contest. She defeated South Korea’s Seong Suyeon by a 5-0 decision in the quarterfinal before facing Kazakhstan’s Natalya Bogdanova in the semifinal.

The semifinal was much closer, with Borgohain winning 3-2. That result placed her in the final against Bao Ziyi, where she produced another strong performance to secure the gold.

Her progress through the knockout stages showed her ability to handle both comfortable wins and closely fought contests during the competition.

A Special Birthday Victory

The gold medal became even more memorable because Borgohain won it on October 2, her 29th birthday. Indian media described the achievement as a special birthday moment for the boxer, who had been looking to turn her previous Asian Games silver into gold.

The victory also came after a difficult period in her career. Following disappointment at the Paris Olympics, Borgohain had spoken about the challenges she faced and questions about her future in boxing. Her performance at Aichi-Nagoya provided a strong response on the international stage.

India’s Strong Boxing Campaign

Borgohain’s gold was part of a successful boxing campaign for India at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. India eventually won six boxing medals at the Games, including three gold medals and three other medals.

The result highlighted the growing depth of Indian boxing, with athletes competing successfully across several men’s and women’s weight categories.

For Borgohain, however, the 75 kg gold carries particular importance. She had already established herself as an Olympic medallist and an Asian Games medallist. By winning gold in Japan, she added another major title to her career.

From Assam to the Asian Games Podium

Lovlina Borgohain comes from Assam and has become one of India’s best-known boxers. Her international career has included major multi-sport competitions, including the Olympic Games and Asian Games.

Her bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 made her one of India’s leading names in women’s boxing. The Asian Games gold now adds another major achievement to that record.

The Aichi-Nagoya victory also gives Borgohain an important milestone as she continues her boxing career. Her success against Bao Ziyi has placed her alongside Mary Kom as one of the Indian women to win Asian Games boxing gold.

Asian Games 2026 Continues India’s Medal Run

The Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya have produced several strong performances from Indian athletes across boxing, archery, shooting, athletics, wrestling and team sports. Borgohain’s victory was part of a particularly successful day for Indian boxing, with India winning multiple boxing gold medals on October 2.

As the Games moved towards their closing stages, India continued to add medals across different sports, with boxing becoming one of the disciplines that contributed significantly to the country’s overall performance.
