Lt Gen Raja Subramani CDS Appointed as India’s Next Defence Chief

Lt Gen Raja Subramani CDS appointed as India’s next Chief of Defence Staff, taking charge on 30 May 2026.

Lt Gen Raja Subramani CDS appointment has been announced by the Government of India. Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani (Retd.) will become the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) on 30 May 2026. He will take charge from General Anil Chauhan and will also serve as Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs under the Ministry of Defence.

What is the Chief of Defence Staff Post?

The Chief of Defence Staff is the highest-ranking military officer in India. The post was created in 2019 after major defence reform recommendations following the Kargil Review Committee report. The CDS acts as the main military adviser to the Defence Minister on matters related to the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

The role is important for improving coordination and joint operations among India’s three armed forces.

Lt Gen Raja Subramani CDS Career Journey

Lt Gen Raja Subramani has served in many important positions during his long military career. Before this appointment, he worked as Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat from September 2025.

He also served as Vice Chief of the Army Staff from July 2024 to July 2025. Earlier, he was the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Army’s Central Command from March 2023 to June 2024.

His leadership experience and knowledge of defence strategy played a major role in his selection as the next CDS.

Military Service of Lt Gen Raja Subramani

Lt Gen Raja Subramani was commissioned into The Garhwal Rifles in December 1985. He has completed more than 37 years of service in the Indian Army.

The Garhwal Rifles is one of the well-known infantry regiments of the Indian Army and has a long history of military service.

During his career, he handled different operational and administrative responsibilities in the armed forces.

Role of Department of Military Affairs

As CDS, Lt Gen Raja Subramani will also head the Department of Military Affairs. This department works under the Ministry of Defence and focuses on military coordination, training, staffing, and modernization of the armed forces.

The CDS position is also connected with promoting jointness and integration among the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Lt Gen Raja Subramani CDS and Naval Changes

Along with the CDS appointment, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has been named as the next Chief of the Naval Staff. He will take charge on 31 May 2026 and succeed Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi.

The new appointments are expected to strengthen India’s military leadership and defence planning in the coming years.
