Milky Way Dwarf Galaxy Discovery: Hidden Ancient Galaxy “Loki” Found

Milky Way Dwarf Galaxy Loki may be a hidden ancient galaxy discovered through metal-poor stars and chemical analysis.

A new study published in May 2026 has suggested the existence of a hidden ancient galaxy named Loki inside the Milky Way. Scientists discovered this possible Milky Way Dwarf Galaxy by studying 20 very old metal-poor stars located close to our Solar System. The research was published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

What is a Milky Way Dwarf Galaxy?

A dwarf galaxy is a small galaxy that contains fewer stars and less mass compared to large galaxies like the Milky Way. Over billions of years, many dwarf galaxies merged with bigger galaxies during the growth of the universe.

Astronomers believe the Milky Way has already absorbed several dwarf galaxies in the past, including Gaia-Enceladus, Sequoia, Kraken, and Thamnos. The newly proposed Loki galaxy may now join this list.

Scientists Found Evidence Through Ancient Stars

Researchers studied 20 ancient stars within 2 kiloparsecs of the Sun. These stars are called metal-poor stars because they contain very low amounts of heavy elements. Such stars are believed to be among the oldest objects in the universe.

The stars linked to Loki showed unusual orbital patterns. Out of the 20 stars, 11 moved in the same direction as the Milky Way’s rotation, while 9 moved in the opposite direction. This mixed movement gave scientists clues that the stars may have come from another galaxy long ago.

Chemical Clues Revealed a Common Origin

The study used ESPaDOnS spectroscopy to examine 23 chemical elements present in the stars. Spectroscopy helps astronomers study the light from stars to understand their composition, temperature, and motion.

Scientists found similar chemical signatures in all 20 stars. The stars also carried traces connected to supernova explosions and neutron star mergers. These events are important because they create heavy elements like gold and platinum.

Researchers also noticed the absence of white dwarf activity, suggesting the original Loki system may have existed only for a short time before merging into the Milky Way.

Why This Discovery Matters

The possible discovery of Loki gives astronomers new information about how galaxies formed and evolved in the early universe. By studying stellar chemistry and star motion, scientists can trace the history of ancient galaxy mergers inside the Milky Way.

The Milky Way itself is a barred spiral galaxy located in the Local Group. Discoveries like Loki help researchers better understand the hidden structure and history of our galaxy.

If future observations confirm Loki, it will become another important example of a Milky Way Dwarf Galaxy that was absorbed billions of years ago.
