What is Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool?

The Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool is a domestic maritime insurance arrangement created to protect Indian shipping companies from different sea-related risks. It was approved by the Union Cabinet in April 2026.

The pool was introduced because global geopolitical tensions increased insurance costs for ships travelling through risky sea routes. India also wanted to reduce dependence on foreign insurers and strengthen its own maritime sector.

Types of Insurance Covered Under BMIP

The Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool offers several important insurance services for ships and cargo.

Hull and Machinery Insurance

This insurance covers physical damage to ships and their machinery caused by accidents or natural disasters.

Cargo Insurance

Cargo insurance protects goods transported by sea from loss or damage during transit.

Protection and Indemnity Insurance

This insurance covers third-party liabilities such as pollution damage, injuries, and collision claims.

War Risk Insurance

War Risk insurance provides protection against losses caused by piracy, terrorism, war, and hostile activities in conflict-prone sea routes.

Institutional Structure of BMIP

The General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re) manages the Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool. Member insurance companies combine their underwriting capacity to provide policies under this arrangement.

The pool can directly handle claims up to USD 100 million. If claims exceed this amount, the sovereign guarantee will act as financial support after the pool reserves are exhausted.

First Policies Issued Under the Pool

New India Assurance Co Ltd issued the first Marine Hull and Machinery War Policy under the Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool.

Hoger Offshore and Marine Pvt Ltd became the first company to receive this policy document. In addition, Vedanta Sterlite Copper Ltd and Balrampur Chini Mills Limited received Marine Cargo War Policy documents under the new arrangement.

Importance of Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool

The Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool is an important step for India’s maritime and trade sector. Maritime insurance plays a key role in global trade because ships and cargo require protection during international transport.

Before BMIP, India was the only major country without its own Protection and Indemnity club. The new pool will help Indian shipping companies access domestic insurance support during global uncertainties and reduce dependence on foreign insurance providers.

The initiative is also expected to improve India’s maritime security and strengthen confidence in Indian shipping operations across international sea routes.
