Indian Navy Deployment under Operation Sankalp
Under Operation Sankalp, the Indian Navy currently has two warships deployed in the Gulf of Aden and the Gulf of Oman. The vessels, including a frigate and a destroyer, have been stationed in the region since 2019 to conduct anti-piracy patrols and protect commercial shipping routes.
The mission aims to safeguard Indian-flagged merchant vessels and ensure maritime security along important international sea lanes. These routes are vital for global trade and energy transportation.
Officials stated that the deployed ships can quickly switch roles during emergencies. If required, they can support evacuation operations, humanitarian missions, and disaster relief efforts.

INS Surat and Regional Maritime Cooperation
Apart from the ships under Operation Sankalp West Asia, INS Surat is currently stationed in Bahrain as part of regional maritime security cooperation. The presence of Indian naval ships in the region strengthens partnerships with other countries and contributes to protecting vital sea routes.
West Asia remains strategically important for India because a large portion of the country’s trade and energy imports passes through the Gulf region.
Government Reviews Security Situation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security on March 1, 2026, to review the evolving situation in West Asia. The meeting included Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
Officials briefed the committee on regional developments and discussed possible impacts on India’s strategic interests, economic stability, and the safety of the Indian diaspora living in the region.

India Prepared for Emergency Response
India has a strong record of conducting evacuation and humanitarian operations during regional crises. The Indian Navy has carried out several rescue missions in the past across the Indian Ocean region.
Authorities confirmed that contingency plans are ready, and the naval forces under Operation Sankalp West Asia remain prepared to respond quickly if the situation requires humanitarian assistance or evacuation support.
