Zubeen Garg Named Plant: New Species Found in Manas National Park
Zubeen Garg Named Plant has become a major highlight in the world of biodiversity research. Botanists from Gauhati University have discovered a new plant species in the grasslands of Manas National Park and named it after famous Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. This discovery shows the rich natural diversity of Assam and adds another unique species to the region’s plant life.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The new plant has been officially named “Osbeckia zubeengargiana”. It belongs to the Melastomataceae family and is part of the Osbeckia genus. The discovery brings attention not only to the beauty of the plant but also to the cultural pride of Assam.
Research and Discovery Process
The plant was discovered by researchers Barnali Das and Namita Nath from Gauhati University along with Prasobh Pulpra from NSS College. The research team conducted several botanical surveys between 2021 and 2025 in the grasslands of Manas National Park, located in the Baksa district of Assam.
Their scientific findings were later published in the research journal Phytotaxa, which focuses on plant classification and biodiversity studies. The publication officially introduced the new species to the scientific community.

Key Features of the New Plant
The newly discovered plant is a perennial shrub that can grow between 2.5 and 3.5 metres tall. It produces clusters of beautiful pink flowers that measure around 2.5 to 3 centimetres in length.
The flowering season usually occurs between mid-September and January. Although the plant looks similar to another species called “Osbeckia rostrata”, researchers noticed several unique characteristics that make it a separate species.
The Osbeckia genus already contains more than 40 known species, mostly found across South and Southeast Asia. The discovery of this new species adds important information to botanical research in the region.
Conservation Status of the Species
During field surveys, scientists found a fairly large population of the plant in the grasslands of Manas National Park. However, its conservation status has currently been classified as “Data Deficient” under the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List.
This means that scientists still need more long-term ecological data before determining whether the species is threatened or safe.
Importance for Biodiversity in Northeast India
The Zubeen Garg Named Plant discovery highlights the ecological importance of Manas National Park, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is known for its diverse wildlife, forests, and grasslands.
Discoveries like this help scientists understand plant diversity and protect natural ecosystems. Naming the plant after Zubeen Garg also celebrates the cultural influence of the beloved Assamese singer while bringing attention to the region’s natural heritage.

Zubeen Garg Named Plant Cultural and Scientific Recognition
The naming of the species after Zubeen Garg is a symbolic gesture that connects science with culture. It recognises his strong impact on Assamese music and society.
At the same time, the discovery reminds people about the importance of protecting the natural beauty and biodiversity of Assam.
