First Shipment to European Markets

The export was supported by Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, along with the Assam agriculture department. The goal is to connect local farmers directly with international buyers.

The rice will be transported by road from Guwahati to Kolkata and then shipped to Europe. This step shows that Assam can meet global quality standards and expand into new markets.

Unique Features of Joha Rice

Joha rice is a traditional aromatic rice grown mainly in Assam. It is known for its sweet smell, fine grains, and rich taste. It is widely used in Assamese cuisine and is popular in premium food markets.

The rice received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2017. This tag helps protect its origin and increases its value in both local and global markets. The GI status has played an important role in boosting its identity worldwide.

Assam GI Joha Rice Export Growing Global Demand

Before entering Europe, Joha rice was already exported to countries in Asia and West Asia. Earlier shipments included Vietnam and nations like Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and Saudi Arabia.

These exports helped introduce Joha rice to global consumers. Today, the demand for traditional and healthy grains is rising, which has further increased interest in this Assamese rice.
