Remembering the Legacy Behind Assam Tech University Honors Kanaklata Barua
At the heart of this historic project lies the inspiring legacy of Kanaklata Barua, one of the youngest martyrs of India’s freedom movement. Born in 1924 in Barangabari village, she grew up witnessing the hardships of British colonial rule. A fearless and determined young woman, she joined the “Mrityu Bahini” (Death Army), a youth-led group that pledged to sacrifice their lives for India’s freedom.
On September 20, 1942, during the height of the Quit India Movement, Kanaklata led a peaceful procession to hoist the Indian national flag at the Gohpur police station. Despite repeated warnings from British officers, she marched ahead holding the flag high, symbolizing the undying spirit of resistance. When police opened fire, the 17-year-old refused to retreat and was shot dead, clutching the Tricolour till her last breath.
Her sacrifice ignited a wave of patriotism across Assam and the nation. To this day, Kanaklata Barua remains an enduring symbol of bravery, youth-led activism, and national pride. She is affectionately remembered as “Birbala”, meaning “brave girl,” and continues to inspire generations of Indians to stand up for truth and justice.
Over the decades, her legacy has been commemorated in multiple ways. The Indian Coast Guard ship ICGS Kanaklata Barua, several educational institutions, and now, this state-of-the-art university, proudly bear her name each a tribute to her indomitable spirit.
