The loading of uranium fuel is the last major step before electricity production begins. After this, the reactor will start controlled nuclear fission and undergo several safety tests. Officials expect trial electricity generation to begin soon, marking a major shift in the nation’s energy sector.
Around 300 megawatts of electricity may be supplied to the national grid on a trial basis by August 2026. Full commercial power generation is likely to begin within 10 months after testing and operational checks are completed.
Capacity and International Support
The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is the largest infrastructure project in Bangladesh. It is being developed by the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission with strong support from Rosatom.
The plant has two units, each producing 1,200 megawatts, with a total capacity of 2,400 megawatts. This makes it one of the most important energy projects in the country’s history.

Bangladesh Nuclear Power Plant Boost to Energy Security
Once fully operational, the plant is expected to supply about 10 to 12 percent of the country’s electricity demand. It will help reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels and provide a stable power supply.
Nuclear energy will also support cleaner electricity generation by lowering carbon emissions. This aligns with Bangladesh’s long-term climate goals.
Strategic Cooperation and Future Plans
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held talks with Alexey Likhachev in Dhaka regarding the project’s progress. Bangladesh appreciated Russia’s continued support, while Rosatom assured further cooperation.
This project highlights growing strategic ties between Bangladesh and Russia. With the plant nearing completion, the country is preparing for a new phase of industrial and economic growth powered by nuclear energy.
