BEE 25 Years Energy Efficiency Highlights India’s Sustainable Energy Progress

BEE 25 Years Energy Efficiency celebrated in New Delhi highlighting India’s progress in energy conservation and climate goals.

The BEE 25 Years Energy Efficiency milestone was celebrated as the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) marked its 25th Foundation Day at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi. The celebration was attended by Manohar Lal Khattar, Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, who served as the Chief Guest. Pankaj Agarwal delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the critical role of energy efficiency in India’s development journey.

Energy Efficiency as a Preventive Strategy

During the event, the Minister described the Bureau of Energy Efficiency as a “preventive institution” for the power sector. He explained that every unit of electricity saved reduces the need to build new power generation capacity and helps lower carbon emissions.

India has made notable progress in climate action. The country has reduced the emissions intensity of its GDP by about 36 percent compared to 2005 levels. It has also achieved around 52 percent non-fossil fuel installed power capacity ahead of its 2030 target.

Several flagship initiatives led by BEE were highlighted. These include the Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme for industrial energy efficiency, Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO), Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), and Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) norms for vehicles. Programmes supporting MSMEs, energy-efficient appliances, and sustainable building standards were also discussed.

BEE 25 Years Energy Efficiency

Energy Efficiency as India’s “First Fuel”

In his address, the Power Secretary called energy efficiency India’s “First Fuel,” as it plays a crucial role in ensuring energy security, affordability, and sustainability. With rising electricity demand driven by digital technologies, data centres, and artificial intelligence, efficient energy use is becoming increasingly important.

The BEE 25 Years Energy Efficiency celebration also reflected on the organisation’s contributions to industrial decarbonisation, improved fuel efficiency in transportation, and the promotion of energy-efficient cooling systems.

Launch of Digital Tools and Identity

A new BEE@25 commemorative logo was unveiled during the event, symbolising innovation, sustainability, and the organisation’s long-term commitment to energy conservation. A special video presentation showcased BEE’s journey and key milestones since its establishment.

To strengthen monitoring and compliance, the RCO Portal was also launched, aimed at improving data-driven implementation of energy efficiency programmes.

Another major highlight was the launch of the BEE Star Label Mobile Application, developed with CLASP. The app allows consumers to scan QR codes on star-labelled appliances to check verified energy performance details, helping people make informed purchasing decisions.

Commitment to Sustainable Growth

Established under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001, BEE has played a key role in shaping India’s energy efficiency policies. The organisation continues to support the country’s climate commitments, including its target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

The BEE 25 Years Energy Efficiency celebration concluded with a special interaction with former Directors General and recognition of retired officials from State Designated Agencies. The event reaffirmed BEE’s commitment to strengthening India’s energy efficiency ecosystem and supporting the vision of a sustainable and self-reliant India.
