CSIR Bio-Bitumen Technology and Its Development

The CSIR Bio-Bitumen Technology has been developed by CSIR–Central Road Research Institute and CSIR–Indian Institute of Petroleum. It uses crop residue like agricultural waste and converts it into bio-bitumen through a thermochemical process.

This new material works similar to traditional bitumen made from petroleum. It is durable and can be used easily in road construction, making it a strong alternative.

Connecting Farmers with Infrastructure

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlighted that this technology connects farming with infrastructure. Farmers can now sell crop residue instead of burning it.

This helps reduce stubble burning, which is a major cause of air pollution. It also creates an extra source of income for farmers while supporting national missions like self-reliance and clean energy.

Environmental and Economic Benefits

The CSIR Bio-Bitumen Technology reduces the need for imported petroleum. It also lowers carbon emissions, making road construction more environment-friendly.

By turning waste into useful material, it supports a circular economy. The technology is suitable for use in national highway projects under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Role in Policy and Industry Growth

The technology transfer event held in New Delhi marks an important step in bringing research into real-world use. It shows strong collaboration between scientists, industries, and policymakers.

With growing support, CSIR Bio-Bitumen Technology is expected to transform India’s road construction sector and promote sustainable development.
