Digital FASTag Pass Expands to 121 Toll Plazas
Digital FASTag Pass has been expanded by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to 121 toll plazas across the country, giving eligible local residents an easier way to access monthly toll passes. The facility is meant for people living within a 20-kilometre radius of participating toll plazas and can be accessed online through the Rajmargyatra mobile app.

The new facility is designed to make regular travel through nearby toll plazas simpler for local residents. Instead of visiting a toll plaza and submitting physical documents, eligible users can apply for the monthly pass digitally.
The expansion to 121 toll plazas is part of NHAI’s wider effort to make highway services more technology-based and convenient for commuters. The local pass is available for one month and allows eligible users to make unlimited trips through the designated toll plaza during its validity period.
The facility is particularly useful for people who regularly travel through a toll plaza located close to their homes.

How the Digital FASTag Pass works
The Digital FASTag Pass uses existing digital systems to check the eligibility of applicants. The process includes consent-based integration with DigiLocker and VAHAN for verifying documents, vehicle details and residential addresses.
NHAI also uses Geographic Information System (GIS)-based verification to determine whether the registered address of an applicant falls within the required 20-kilometre distance from the selected toll plaza.
Once the details are verified, eligible commuters can subscribe to the monthly pass online. This reduces the need for paperwork and physical visits to toll plazas.
The process is aimed at making local toll services faster while also improving the accuracy of eligibility checks.
Rajmargyatra app brings the service online
The monthly local pass can be subscribed to through the Rajmargyatra mobile app. The digital system allows users to complete the application process from their phones.
The move is part of the growing use of mobile applications for highway-related services in India. Digital payments, FASTag transactions, online travel information and other highway services are increasingly being brought together through technology platforms.
For regular commuters, an online application can save time and reduce the need to interact with toll plaza officials for routine pass-related work.
20-kilometre eligibility rule
One of the main conditions of the local pass is the distance between the user’s registered residential address and the designated toll plaza.
Residents living within a 20-kilometre radius of an eligible toll plaza can apply for the facility, subject to verification. GIS technology is used to check the location of the registered address.
The use of digital location verification is intended to ensure that the facility reaches people who actually live close to the toll plaza.
Vehicle information is also checked through VAHAN, India’s national vehicle registration database. DigiLocker integration can help verify relevant digital documents with the user’s consent.
FASTag continues to support digital toll collection
FASTag is India’s electronic toll collection system and uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. A FASTag is attached to a vehicle and linked to an account from which the applicable toll amount is automatically deducted when the vehicle passes through a compatible toll plaza.
The system has helped reduce the need for cash payments at highway toll plazas and has made toll collection more automated.
The new local pass facility builds on this existing digital infrastructure by providing eligible residents with a monthly access option at participating toll plazas.
Pilot project started in Delhi
Before the nationwide expansion, NHAI tested the digital local pass system at the Mundka–Bakkarwala Toll Plaza on Delhi’s Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II).
The pilot began in July 2026 and was used to test the digital application, verification and subscription process.
Following the pilot, NHAI expanded the facility to 121 toll plazas. The authority has also indicated that the system will be introduced at more toll plazas in phases.

What local commuters can expect
For eligible residents, the facility can make regular travel through a nearby toll plaza more convenient. The monthly subscription removes the need to repeatedly make individual toll payments during the validity period of the pass.
The digital process also means users do not need to visit the toll plaza simply to apply for the local pass or submit physical documents.
As NHAI continues the phased expansion, more local commuters across India are expected to get access to the digital pass system.
The initiative reflects the wider shift towards digital highway services, with mobile applications, electronic toll collection, digital documents and location-based verification being used together to simplify road travel.
