FSI Anavaran System Halt Raises Forest Monitoring Concerns

FSI Anavaran System Halt stops deforestation alerts, raising concerns over forest monitoring and conservation in India.

FSI Anavaran System Halt has raised concerns about forest monitoring in India. The Forest Survey of India (FSI) has stopped sending regular deforestation alerts through its AI-based Anavaran portal. This system was important for tracking forest loss using modern technology.

What is the Anavaran System?

The Anavaran-Deforestation Alert System started in January 2024. It used satellite images and machine learning to detect changes in forest cover. The system compared old and new images to find areas where trees were cut.

It sent alerts every 15 days to state forest departments so they could take quick action. The platform worked using Google Earth Engine and aimed to improve real-time forest monitoring.

Why the System Was Stopped

The Anavaran portal has not been updated since November 2025. Active monitoring stopped in January 2026. Officials said the system was running as a pilot project and is now under review.

As a result, states are no longer receiving regular alerts about deforestation, which may affect quick response actions.

Technology Used in Monitoring

The system used advanced satellite data for accurate results. It mainly used Sentinel-2 images to detect forest changes. During cloudy weather, it used Sentinel-1 radar data.

The system also used past seasonal data to identify unusual changes in vegetation. It could detect deforestation in small areas, with high accuracy between 10 to 20 metres.

Data and State Observations

Between January 2024 and October 2025, FSI issued over 12,000 alerts. On average, around 561 alerts were sent each month.

The number of alerts increased between November and March, when deforestation activities are higher. States like Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh recorded the most alerts. Other states included Nagaland, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Assam, and Tripura.

Many states confirmed that alerts stopped after December 2025.

Global Comparison and Future Scope

The Anavaran system was seen as a major step in India’s forest monitoring efforts. Similar systems exist in other parts of the world, like Terra-I in Latin America.

However, Anavaran offered better image quality and more detailed tracking. Experts believe that after improvements, such systems can help in early detection of deforestation and better forest protection.

Final Thoughts on FSI Anavaran System Halt

The FSI Anavaran System Halt has created a gap in real-time forest monitoring. While the system is under review, experts hope it will return in a stronger form. Advanced technology like this is important for protecting India’s forests and ensuring sustainable development.
