Early Life and Education

Rahul Bhatia was born in Nainital, Uttarakhand. He completed his higher education in Canada from the University of Waterloo, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. After finishing his studies, he returned to India in 1984 with plans to start a telecom business. However, due to strict regulations at that time, he could not move forward and shifted his focus to the travel industry.

Building InterGlobe and IndiGo

Bhatia joined his family’s travel business in Delhi and transformed it into InterGlobe Enterprises. Over time, the company expanded into travel services, hospitality, and aviation.

In 2004, he founded InterGlobe Aviation and later launched IndiGo in 2006 with Rakesh Gangwal. The airline followed a low-cost model, focusing on efficiency, fast turnaround, and a simple fleet strategy. This helped IndiGo grow quickly in India.

Under Bhatia’s leadership, IndiGo became the leading airline in India within a few years. By 2010, it had captured a large share of the domestic aviation market.

As interim CEO, Rahul Bhatia will now handle key management responsibilities. His experience and long-term vision are expected to help IndiGo manage its current challenges and maintain its strong position in the aviation sector.

The Indian aviation industry is regulated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, and IndiGo continues to play a major role in shaping the market.
