Guntur UNIDO GEM Award for Women-Led Waste Management Success
United Nations Industrial Development Organization has honoured Guntur Municipal Corporation with the prestigious Gender Equality Mobilisation (GEM) Award. The recognition highlights Guntur’s strong efforts in promoting women empowerment along with sustainable urban waste management.

Under this initiative, more than 200 women have been trained and employed as electric auto drivers for door-to-door garbage collection. These women were earlier working in informal waste collection. With proper training and support, they are now part of a formal system, earning stable incomes and improving their quality of life.

Guntur UNIDO GEM Award Boosts Green Jobs
The project is part of the Sustainable Cities Integrated Approach Pilot supported by United Nations Industrial Development Organization. It focuses on using electric vehicles to reduce pollution and promote eco-friendly waste management. At the same time, it creates green jobs for women, making the system both sustainable and inclusive.
Global Recognition in Vienna
The Guntur UNIDO GEM Award was presented during the International Day of Women in Industry 2026 celebrations in Vienna. The award was received by project manager Olga Rataj. The event was attended by global leaders, including former Finnish President Tarja Halonen, showing the international importance of this achievement.

Strong Governance and Urban Performance
Apart from the Guntur UNIDO GEM Award, the civic body also received state-level appreciation for its excellent property tax collection in the 2025–26 financial year. This recognition was given at a workshop on Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 held in Vijayawada. Officials praised the corporation for its efficient administration and strong urban governance.
