ICC Deputy Chair Tavengwa Mukuhlani has been appointed Deputy Chairperson of the International Cricket Council (ICC) until November 2027. Mukuhlani, who is the Chairman of Zimbabwe Cricket and represents Zimbabwe on the ICC Board, has become the first Zimbabwean to hold the ICC Deputy Chairperson position.

Tavengwa Mukuhlani Gets Senior ICC Role

Mukuhlani takes over from Imran Khwaja of Singapore, who left the ICC Board. His appointment adds a senior leadership responsibility to his existing role in Zimbabwe Cricket.

Before becoming Deputy Chairperson, Mukuhlani was already involved in several ICC committees. He serves on the Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee and the Nominations Committee. He also chairs the Human Resources and Remuneration Committee. These responsibilities have given him experience in financial, administrative and governance matters within the ICC.

The ICC Board is a key part of the organisation’s governance structure. It brings together representatives from cricket’s Full Members and other members of the ICC leadership. The current ICC Board listing identifies Mukuhlani as Zimbabwe’s representative and Deputy Chair.

Zimbabwe’s Growing Role in Global Cricket

The appointment comes at an important period for Zimbabwe and African cricket. Zimbabwe will co-host the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 with South Africa and Namibia.

The 2027 World Cup will mark the return of the men’s tournament to Africa after 24 years. The three host countries are already involved in preparations for the event. In August 2026, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Namibia also took part in a tri-series that the ICC described as part of the build-up to the 2027 tournament.

Mukuhlani’s new role therefore comes as African cricket prepares for a major international tournament. His experience with Zimbabwe Cricket and his involvement in ICC committees will place him in the senior governance structure during this period.

Focus on Cricket’s Global Growth

The ICC is also preparing for a period of wider international growth. Cricket is set to return to the Olympic Games, adding another major platform for the sport outside its traditional international competitions.

The ICC has highlighted the expansion of cricket into new markets and the creation of more opportunities for its members. Mukuhlani said after his appointment that he would work with ICC Chair Jay Shah and other Board members on the organisation’s priorities, including growing the game and reaching new audiences and markets.

The return of cricket to the Olympics is also expected to bring greater attention to the sport in countries where cricket has historically had a smaller presence. This makes ICC governance an important part of managing the sport’s international expansion.

Mukuhlani’s Work with Zimbabwe Cricket

Mukuhlani has been involved in cricket administration through his leadership of Zimbabwe Cricket. He also represents Zimbabwe on the ICC Board, giving him direct experience in both national and international cricket administration.

His responsibilities now extend further through the Deputy Chairperson role. The ICC’s committee structure includes areas such as finance and commercial affairs, nominations, human resources and remuneration. Mukuhlani already has responsibilities across these areas, including chairing the HR and Remuneration Committee.

His appointment also gives Zimbabwe representation at one of the highest levels of ICC governance. The ICC said his experience and understanding of the region would be useful as the organisation and its members prepare for the 2027 World Cup and work on the development of cricket in Africa.

What the New Role Means for African Cricket

The ICC Deputy Chair position gives Mukuhlani a larger role in international cricket administration at a time when Africa is preparing to host the men’s World Cup.

Zimbabwe has been part of international cricket for decades, while South Africa is one of the sport’s established Full Members and Namibia has continued to expand its international cricket programme. The joint hosting of the 2027 World Cup is bringing these three cricket nations together for one of the sport’s biggest events.

Mukuhlani’s appointment also highlights the role of cricket administrators from Africa in the ICC’s wider decision-making structure. His term will continue until November 2027, covering the period of preparation for and delivery of the 2027 World Cup.
