The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme has gained major momentum. The government is expected to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) soon to selected private companies. This marks an important step in boosting India’s domestic fighter aircraft manufacturing ecosystem.
The AMCA project is India’s indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft programme. It is designed with advanced stealth features, modern avionics, and superior combat capabilities. Increased private sector involvement is expected to improve production speed and strengthen defence innovation.
India Exploring Sixth-Generation Fighter Collaboration
As part of the India AMCA & 6th-Gen Jet Plans, the country is also looking at international partnerships for sixth-generation fighter aircraft development. India has reportedly started discussions with global multi-country programmes to access future aerial combat technologies.
Sixth-generation fighter jets are expected to include artificial intelligence integration, advanced stealth systems, drone teaming capabilities, and network-centric warfare features. These technologies will play a key role in future air combat operations.

Missile Development Expands Strategic Strength
India is also making rapid progress in missile technology. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has expressed readiness to move forward with the Agni-VI intercontinental ballistic missile programme after receiving government approval.
At the same time, India’s hypersonic glide missile projects are progressing steadily. The Long-Range Anti-Ship Missile programme is currently at an advanced stage, and trials are expected soon. Hypersonic missiles can travel at speeds above Mach 5, making them extremely difficult to intercept.
The Agni missile series continues to remain a major part of India’s strategic deterrence capabilities.
Defence Production and Export Goals
The government is strongly promoting indigenous defence production under its self-reliance strategy. Officials have highlighted that major global powers operate multiple defence production lines, and India aims to follow a similar path.
With stronger innovation and private sector participation, India is targeting defence exports worth ₹50,000 crore by 2029. The India AMCA & 6th-Gen Jet Plans are expected to play an important role in increasing India’s global competitiveness in the defence sector.
