In recent months, security concerns in the Gulf region have disturbed normal shipping routes. Ships are taking longer paths, ports are becoming crowded, and extra charges are being added. These problems have increased the cost of exporting goods from India.
The Strait of Hormuz, an important trade route, has been at the center of these disruptions. As a result, Indian exporters sending goods to West Asia are facing major challenges.

Government Steps to Control the Situation
To manage the crisis, the government formed an Inter-Ministerial Group on 2 March 2026. This group has been reviewing the situation daily and working with different ministries and industry leaders.
Some important steps taken include:
- Relaxation in export procedures
- Waiver on port storage charges
- Better coordination at ports
- Monitoring of freight and insurance costs
These actions aim to reduce the burden on exporters and keep trade moving smoothly.
Key Benefits of the RELIEF Scheme
The RELIEF scheme provides strong support to exporters during this difficult period.
- Exporters with existing insurance cover between 14 February and 15 March 2026 will get up to 100% extra risk coverage
- For shipments from 16 March to 15 June 2026, up to 95% risk coverage is available
- MSME exporters without insurance will get up to 50% reimbursement on extra freight and insurance costs
- The maximum support for MSMEs is ₹50 lakh per exporter
ECGC Ltd has been given the responsibility to implement the scheme.
India RELIEF Scheme Boosts Exporters: Financial Support
The government has set aside ₹497 crore for this scheme. A digital dashboard will be used to track progress and ensure quick action when needed. The Export Promotion Mission committee will keep reviewing the situation based on global developments.
This initiative is designed to protect exporters, reduce losses, and help India stay competitive in global trade even during uncertain times.
