India U20 Football Qualifies After 20 Years
India U20 football has qualified for the AFC U20 Asian Cup main tournament after a gap of 20 years. India secured its place on September 6, 2026, after defeating Bangladesh 3-0 at Do’stlik Stadium in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. India’s previous appearance in the main tournament was in 2006.
The result marks an important moment for Indian youth football. The team finished second in Group B and earned qualification as one of the best runners-up from the qualifying groups.
India U20 Football Makes a Strong Return
India U20 football entered the final qualifying match knowing that a positive result against Bangladesh would be important for its chances. The team produced a confident performance and scored three goals without conceding.
Danny Meitei Laishram opened the scoring in the 25th minute. Vishal Yadav doubled India’s lead in the 60th minute, while Md Arbash completed the scoring in the 79th minute.
The 3-0 victory gave India six points from three matches. The team had earlier defeated Syria but lost to hosts Uzbekistan during the Group B campaign.

India Finishes Second in Group B
Uzbekistan finished at the top of Group B with nine points from three matches. India followed with six points, while Syria collected three points and Bangladesh finished without a point.
Although India did not top the group, its six-point total was enough to qualify as one of the seven best runners-up across the eight qualifying groups.
The qualification system gave teams that finished second in their groups another route into the main tournament. India successfully used that opportunity after its strong performance against Bangladesh.
AFC U20 Asian Cup 2027
The AFC U20 Asian Cup is the main continental competition for men’s under-20 national football teams in Asia. It is organised by the Asian Football Confederation, which is responsible for football competitions across Asia and Australia.
The 2027 edition will be hosted by China. The tournament is scheduled to take place from March 24 to April 10, 2027.
For India U20 football, the qualification means the young players will now get the opportunity to compete against some of the strongest youth teams from across Asia.
A Long Wait Ends
India’s qualification is notable because the team had not reached the main AFC U20 Asian Cup tournament since 2006. The 20-year gap made the latest qualification particularly significant for Indian youth football.
Over the years, India has continued to participate in youth-level international competitions, but reaching the main AFC U20 Asian Cup tournament has remained difficult.
The latest campaign has given the current generation of players a chance to compete on a bigger continental stage. It will also provide valuable international experience to players who could become part of India’s senior national team in the future.
Mahesh Gawali Leads the Team
Head coach Mahesh Gawali guided India during the qualifying campaign. His team had to manage three matches against Uzbekistan, Syria and Bangladesh.
India began its Group B campaign with a victory over Syria before suffering a defeat against Uzbekistan. The final match against Bangladesh became especially important because India needed a strong result to improve its qualification chances.
The players responded with three goals and a clean sheet, giving the team the result it needed.
Three Goals Secure Qualification
The match against Bangladesh was controlled by India through important stages of the game. Danny Meitei Laishram gave India the lead in the first half, scoring in the 25th minute.
India continued to create pressure after the break and extended its advantage when Vishal Yadav scored in the 60th minute. With Bangladesh unable to find a response, Md Arbash added India’s third goal in the 79th minute.
The 3-0 scoreline also demonstrated India’s defensive strength in the decisive match, as Bangladesh failed to score.
China to Host the 2027 Tournament
The next major challenge for India U20 football will come at the AFC U20 Asian Cup in China. The tournament will bring together the leading under-20 teams from across the continent.

China’s hosting of the competition will provide a major platform for young Asian footballers. The tournament will also have an important link to the global youth football calendar.
The top four teams at the AFC U20 Asian Cup 2027 will qualify directly for the FIFA U20 World Cup 2027. This gives the continental tournament added importance for teams looking to reach the global stage.
Do’stlik Stadium Hosts the Decisive Match
India secured qualification at Do’stlik Stadium in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan hosted the Group B qualifying matches, giving the tournament a competitive environment for the participating teams.
Playing in an international qualifying campaign allows young players to experience different playing styles and conditions. For India’s squad, the matches against Uzbekistan, Syria and Bangladesh provided valuable exposure ahead of the 2027 tournament.
The 3-0 win over Bangladesh ultimately gave India U20 football the points needed to return to the AFC U20 Asian Cup after two decades.
